Missions

Cryogen-free (“dry”) dilution refrigerators have become popular in recent years due to their large experimental space, automated operation, and the cost of helium. The benefits of dry dilution refrigerators have enabled a large community to achieve temperatures as low as ~10 mK. However, several areas of research, including the host team activities, require even lower temperatures. We are developing a continuous nuclear demagnetization refrigerator (CNDR), which would allow ultra-low temperature researchers to take full advantage of cryogen-free technology.

Activités

- Based on the existing codes, propose a route for a software versatile enough to model both electronic and nuclear systems as developed in both laboratories
- Contribute to cryogenic tests of the 2nd nuclear stage already assembled and waiting to be characterized as a single stage (Tmin, warming up rate, comparison with model, etc.).

Compétences

• Knowledge: Condensed Matter Physics
• Know-how: Cryogenics, instrumentation, simulation, programming, automation, development and setup of scientific experiments, data analysis
• Soft skills: adaptation skills, open and creative mind

Contexte de travail

The CRYONEXT program is part of the French strategy for quantum computing. It aims at developing enabling technologies in the field of cryogenics. The Ultra Low Temperature group at Institut Néel is involved in one of the projects consisting in developing a continuous nuclear demagnetization refrigerator operating in the 1 mK range. In the same program, a development is expected in a partner laboratory for an electronic ADR operating at 20 mK.
A single stage – non continuous – system has already been tested at Institut Neel providing very encouraging results .
The goal of the post-doc position is to prepare for the upcoming development of a demonstrator operating continuously at 1 mK or below while strengthening the collaboration with our partner.

The Institut Néel is a condensed matter physics laboratory in Grenoble. It consists of 450 employees, including 175 researchers. The research activities are centered on fundamental condensed matter physics and also include some chemistry, engineering and life sciences. The Institute possesses technological expertise at the highest level, which is crucial for research projects carried out here. While the research is primarily experimental, it also relies on strong abilities in analytical and numerical theoretical physics.
Host research group: Ultra-low temperatures (MCBT-Institut Néel)

Le poste se situe dans un secteur relevant de la protection du potentiel scientifique et technique (PPST), et nécessite donc, conformément à la réglementation, que votre arrivée soit autorisée par l'autorité compétente du MESR.

Contraintes et risques

The main risks are associated with cryogenic fluids.
