Job Description

Missions

The Expert in Instrument Development will be responsible for developing an instrumental platform tailored to scientific needs and/or enhancing existing platforms.
This will involve designing a hybrid prototype to enable source-level enrichment of metadata, paradata, and data in heritage science, both software and hardware-based, leveraging the W7 conceptual model

Activity

As part of their missions, the Instrument Developer will be responsible for:
- Analyzing scientific requirements and translating them into technical specifications.
- Co-drafting technical specifications with the project's scientific leaders.
- Developing an operational prototype suite (both software and hardware components).
- Overseeing platform development, ensuring deployment, and guaranteeing operational reliability.
- Designing and maintaining human-machine interfaces (UI/UX).
- Developing solutions for managing and storing metadata acquired by the system.
- Planning platform development, including testing phases with project partners.
- Piloting and controlling the integration of systems and subsystems.
- Validating and qualifying the instrument at each stage of development.
- Participating in the presentation, dissemination, and valorization of achievements.
- Supporting and advising on the transfer of the prototype to operational use.

Your Profil

Skills

Knowledge expected and appreciated :
- Heritage digitization engineering and sciences (imaging, automation, microcomputing, mechanics) – Advanced knowledge.
- Human-machine interface (HMI) management and maintenance, as well as software development management via Git.
- Web technologies (REST APIs), databases (SQLite), graphical interfaces (Vue.js), digital fabrication, and 3D printing – Advanced knowledge.
- Domain-specific tools and software (Arduino, STM32, Raspberry Pi): design and modeling – Basic knowledge.
- Heritage scientific instrumentation and imaging – Basic knowledge.
- Written and oral presentation techniques.
- English language: B2 level (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Operational Skills :
- Anticipate functional and technical evolutions.
- Technically manage the project.
- Conduct technology watch to guide the choice of technologies used.

Your Work Environment

This job offer is part of the European project GRAPHIA (HORIZON-INFRA-2024-TECH-01-01 – R&D for the next generation of scientific instrumentation, tools, methods, and solutions for Research Infrastructure upgrade).
The position focuses on developing an innovative prototype suite (ANAMNESIS-HYPERMNESIA) within Work Package 3. The aim is to increase the technological readiness level (TRL) of the following research prototype : https://linkstack.fr/@anamnesis. These activities cover the formalization of workflows and the creation of data corpora intended for integration into federated knowledge graphs.
This project is interconnected with other initiatives under the FSP (Fédération des Sciences du Patrimoine), including the Equipex+ Patrimex Espadon.
The successful candidate will be based at the MAP Laboratory (Models and Simulations for Architecture and Heritage), UPR 2002 CNRS, located on the CNRS Joseph Aiguier Campus in Marseille. Field or laboratory travel may be required as part of the missions.
The expert will collaborate with engineers and E-RIHS partners involved in the project (CNR – Italy, CYI – Cyprus).
Internally, the project will be supported by a team consisting of:

The scientific lead, an engineer specializing in multimodal instrumentation for heritage science,
A post-doctoral researcher in data curation,
An internal development team (infrastructure manager, technology transfer specialist, software engineer).
The laboratory's digital fabrication workshop (FabLab) will be made available to carry out this project.
