Missions
Performance is at the heart of the Western classical music tradition. Yet we know very little about how today's classical music audiences view the practice of performance and the values that generally underly it (fidelity, authenticity, creativity, etc.). The aim of the P-VALUES project is precisely to probe these representations in greater detail, in association with the Sciences et Technologies de la Musique et du Son laboratory (CNRS-IRCAM) and the Cité de la Musique - Philharmonie de Paris, and by combining the methods of experimental philosophy and the sociology of music.
Activités
As part of the P-VALUES project, the post-doctoral fellow will conduct a series of semi-directed individual interviews with a group of subscribers to the Philharmonie de Paris, focusing in particular on the public who attend classical piano recitals. The interviews will aim both to uncover the values attached to the act of performance (see for example Antoine Hennion's work on the pragmatics of taste; or Nathalie Heinich's work on the sociology of values), and to draw on the respondents' listening culture to collect a number of concrete examples of performance involving one (or more) normative conflicts.
Compétences
The postdoctoral fellow is expected to have expertise in the sociology of music (or art in general) and/or the musicology of performance.
Contexte de travail
The post-doctoral fellow will be attached to the Analyse des Pratiques Musicales team at Ircam, and will work under the supervision of Clément Canonne (Director of Research at CNRS).
