The work is financed by the ANR's PolyPCS program, whose global objective is to prepare easily modified sensors for pesticides and related pollutants. Its aim is the development of Organic Field Effect Transistors (OFETs) that employ phospholes ('phosphacyclopentadienes') as components of the OFET conducting layer.

The successful candidate will be responsible for synthesising and characterising new, non-symmetrically substituted phospholes. He or she will also ensure their purification, and be capable of optimising their preparation sufficiently to allow their evaluation as sensors in classical solutions and within electronic devices.


The work required will involve the following:
The synthesis of new, non-symmetrically substituted phospholes.
Their characterisation by standard techniques (multinuclear NMR, Mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction).
Their purification to levels compatible with a) solution studies and b) incorporation into Organic Field Effect Transistor devices.
Interacting with partner laboratories (CNRS UMR 6226 and 6164), so as to use experimental test results to iteratively improve phosphole design.


Candidates should possess a diploma at the M1 or M2 level.
The work is principally synthetic in nature, and competence in the synthesis and manipulation of noxious, air- sensitive molecules is required. Experience in handing phosphorus(III) or sulfur(II) compounds would constitute a significant advantage. Training will be provided, but 'hands-on' experience with Bruker NMR equipment would be highly advantageous, as would knowledge of dry- box technology and/or machine- assisted MPLC chromatography.
The contract will end on June 30, 2022.

Work Context

Work will be undertaken in the Laboratory of Molecular Chemistry at the Ecole Polytechnique. The LCM pursues both fundamental and applied research, in areas that range from organometallic chemistry to physical and analytical chemistry. The Laboratory comprises a group of approximately 40 workers, and has an equipment park that provides dryboxes, real- time dedicated 31P NMR spectrometry, diffractometry, GC-MS, and cyclic voltammetry to its researchers on a largely 'hands- on' basis. Because the Ecole Polytechnique lies at the heart of the Saclay plateau, lab members benefit both from the asset- rich environment of the polytechnique campus, and also from membership of the integrated 'Chemistry Community' that exists within IP Paris.
