Missions

We are looking for a research engineer to work on a project combining virology and cell biology. This project will be mentored by Dr Maika Deffieu (IRIM, Montpellier) in the team of Dr Raphael Gaudin. The project will study the molecular mechanisms needed for the entry of the hepatitis B virus inside hepatocytes. The project will use fluorescent microscopy technics in a BSL3 confined environment. New methodologies will allow the ex-vivo study of the virus in precision-cut liver slices, which will be used as a primary model to validate the entry mechanism of the virus. The recruted engineer will develop innovative tools to visualize the virus interaction with its receptor.

Activities

The research engineer will purify fluorescent viruses. Tools allowing the visualization of the interaction between the virus and its receptor will be designed. Image analyzes will be developed for the quantification and the understanding of the results. The recruted candidate will closely collaborate with the Dr Maika Deffieu as well as the students participating to the project. The research engineer will be trained for sample mounting and microscopy acquisition.

Skills

Master 2 level in virology and cellular biology. A skill in fluorescent microscopy is appreciated but not mandatory. A good skill in molecular biology, cellular culture, and basic biochemical methods (SDS-PAGE, Western Blots) are required. Strong ability to work in a collaborative environment. English level B1 minimum.

Work Context

The project will take place at Montpellier in the south of France. The candidate will benefit from a dynamic and interdisciplinary environment. Our team is composed of 18 members with skills in virology, cellular biology, neurology and hepatology. The team is international. All interactions are made in English including weekly meetings, external and internal seminars. The atmosphere is friendly. This training will support the future career orientation of the selected candidate.

The position is located in a sector under the protection of scientific and technical potential (PPST), and therefore requires, in accordance with the regulations, that your arrival is authorized by the competent authority of the MESR.
