Job Description
Missions
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated research engineer to establish and implement molecular and developmental biology techniques within the framework of an ERC-funded evo-devo project investigating morphological innovations in bats (teeth, larynx, and sensory adaptations). The successful candidate will contribute to the generation of experimental data from animal tissues from both model and non-model species, optimize experimental protocols, train laboratory members, serve as a liaison between the laboratory and technical platforms, and assist with laboratory organization and ordering management.
Activity
• Implement and optimize experimental protocols in histology and molecular biology
• Prepare biological samples (fixation, embedding, cryoprotection) and perform cryostat sectioning for in situ hybridization and spatial transcriptomics
• Perform in situ hybridization and related techniques (HCR RNA-FISH, immunohistochemistry)
• Acquire images using confocal microscopy
• Implement single-nucleus or single-cell preparation protocols for single-nucleus or single-cell RNA-seq experiments
• Train and support postdoctoral researchers and laboratory users, including international researchers, in experimental techniques, and act as an interface with technological platforms (imaging, genomics, histology)
• Manage laboratory orders, inventories, and consumables
• Implement laboratory health and safety procedures
• Write and update experimental protocols
Your Profil
Skills
Technical skills
• Molecular biology: Proficiency in dissection techniques, fixation, and preparation of biological samples (whole tissues and isolated cells), cloning, DNA and RNA extraction, and methanol-based tissue dehydration.
• Tissue and cell preparation for single-cell RNA-seq approaches.
• High-throughput sequencing: Experience with RNA-seq and next-generation sequencing (NGS), including library preparation for sequencing.
• Imaging: Knowledge of RNA in situ FISH protocols and experience using confocal microscopes (image acquisition and analysis), as well as image analysis software.
Transversal skills
• Rigor and organization: Ability to manage multiple experiments in parallel and accurately document protocols.
• Autonomy and initiative: Ability to troubleshoot technical issues and optimize experimental protocols.
• Teamwork: Ability to collaborate with postdoctoral researchers and platform engineers.
• Communication: Ability to write reports and present results in French and English.
A minimum of two years of experience is required. Prior experience in sample preparation for single-cell and/or spatial transcriptomics experiments will be considered a major asset.
Your Work Environment
The position is based within an interdisciplinary research unit in evolution (evo-devo, evolutionary biology, phylogenomics, paleontology, and ecology) that brings together laboratories specializing in molecular biology and bioinformatics.
The research engineer will work under the supervision of the ERC project leader, in close interaction with members of the Macro Evolution and Development team and the unit's technological platforms. The position provides access to standard molecular biology laboratory facilities as well as histology and microscopy platforms. Occasional interactions may also take place with the CRCL platform in Lyon.
As the team includes both French and international researchers. Your must have a strong experience of the French system, be fluent in French and be proficiency in English to be able to make the link between the French core facilities and international researchers of the team., and most collective interactions (lab meetings, team meetings) are conducted in English.
