Missions
Biomolecular condensates have recently emerged as fundamental in cell biology, complementing membrane-bound organelles in the organization of cellular functions. Biomolecular condensates are mesoscopic membrane-less organelles that allow the dynamic orchestration of biochemical reactions by restricting them to a confined space. Cytoplasmic RNA-protein (RNP) condensates are a class of biomolecular condensates, classically described as hubs for mRNA regulation. Most RNP condensates are composed of heterogeneous immiscible phases, but how this feature contributes to their biological functions remains largely unexplored. Using germ granules in Drosophila embryos, an outstanding model of RNP condensates, we recently demonstrated the functional compartmentalization of germ granules, translational repression and activation taking place in two distinct phases. The project will focus on dissecting the intricate relationships between RNP condensate architecture and functions. Using genetics, chemical approaches and an advanced system to generate artificial condensates, the candidate will address how mRNA translation contributes to germ granule biphasic architecture and biophysical properties.
