Job Description

Missions

Van der Waals heterostructures are a promising platform for studying and engineering electronic properties in quantum materials. By stacking different two-dimensional (2D) materials, it is possible to create systems with new and tunable properties.

In these heterostructures, the electronic properties are strongly affected by interactions at the interfaces between layers. Charge transfer between materials can modify the electronic density and create new electronic states. In addition, hybridization between electronic states from different layers can significantly change the electronic band structure and lead to new physical phenomena.

In this postdoctoral project, we will investigate the electronic properties of van der Waals heterostructures, with a focus on interface interactions, charge transfer, and electronic hybridization. The goal is to understand how these mechanisms influence the band structure and the physical properties of 2D materials. The project will combine electronic spectroscopy with complementary characterization techniques, including electronic transport, microscopy, and optical spectroscopy, to establish links between electronic structure and emerging physical properties.

Activity

Design and perform optical and electronic characterization of two-dimensional materials and their van der Waals heterostructures to investigate their electronic, optical, and excitonic properties.
Implement optical spectroscopy techniques, including photoluminescence (PL), Raman spectroscopy, and temperature-dependent photoluminescence, as well as band structure characterization techniques for two-dimensional materials.
Analyze and interpret experimental data to investigate quantum confinement effects, charge transfer, interfacial interactions, and electronic hybridization in van der Waals heterostructures.
Supervise Ph.D. candidates, Master's students, and interns while overseeing experimental activities, data analysis, and the development of new experimental methodologies.
Collaborate closely with project partners to compare experimental observations with theoretical models and establish correlations between the electronic structure, optical properties, and emerging physical phenomena.
Disseminate research findings through publications in peer-reviewed international journals, presentations at national and international conferences, and active participation in scientific outreach activities.

Your Profil

Skills

The successful candidate will participate in the design, fabrication, and optimization of van der Waals heterostructures and related electronic devices. The work will involve micro- and nanofabrication techniques as well as the assembly of two-dimensional (2D) materials.
The project will focus on the study of the electronic properties of these heterostructures using different spectroscopy techniques. Particular attention will be given to interface-related phenomena, including charge transfer and hybridization between electronic states from different layers.
The main objective is to understand how interface interactions modify the electronic structure and lead to the emergence of new electronic states in 2D materials.
The candidate will also contribute to the analysis and interpretation of experimental results in connection with theoretical models. The outcomes of the project will be disseminated through publications in international journals and presentations at scientific conferences.

Your Work Environment

This position focuses on the design, fabrication, and study of van der Waals heterostructures and related electronic devices. The postdoctoral researcher will be involved in the fabrication of structures based on two-dimensional (2D) materials and in the investigation of their electronic properties using different spectroscopy techniques.
The project will provide expertise in the study of interfaces in 2D materials, charge transfer, and electronic hybridization. Particular attention will be given to understanding the mechanisms that govern the electronic properties of these systems.
Applicants should have a strong background in at least one of the following areas: condensed matter physics, two-dimensional materials, van der Waals materials, or materials science. A strong interest in experimental research, data analysis, and the physical interpretation of experimental results is expected.

Constraints and risks

The postdoctoral researcher will join the Mat2D team at the Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (C2N), where they will carry out research on van der Waals heterostructures and their electronic properties.
C2N is a joint research unit of the CNRS and Université Paris-Saclay. The laboratory brings together more than 120 researchers and faculty members, as well as around 80 engineers, technicians, and administrative staff. It also hosts a state-of-the-art technological platform with more than 2,900 m² of cleanroom facilities dedicated to micro- and nanofabrication.
The project will be carried out in an international and multidisciplinary research environment, providing access to leading facilities for the fabrication and characterization of nanoscale materials and devices.
This position is located in an area subject to regulations for the protection of the French scientific and technical potential (PPST). In accordance with current regulations, recruitment is subject to prior authorization from the relevant authority of the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research.
