Missions

He or she will take the initiative, participate in the orientation, carry out all or part of the tests, and participate in the validation of the technological choices and the overall architecture of the network prefiguring the infrastructure.

Activities

Paper study and draft design architecture of the future infrastructure
Laboratory experiments for the validation of technological design choices
Automated drive,, acquisition and measurement with the help of the software engineer (Study or research engineer),
Pre-operation of the network supervision,
Functional design of the database architecture, participation in tests and trials
Drafting of progress reports and presentation at project progress meetings
The research engineer participates in the supervision of the team's doctoral student and trainees. He or she participates in technology track. When the progress of the work allows it, he or she participates in writing articles in peer-reviewed journals and presents his or her work at international conferences.
He or she participates to the project progress reports (5 trips / 2 years)

Skills

Core Competencies :
General knowledge in optics, electronics.
General knowledge in semiconductor laser
General knowledge in measurement techniques,
Know how to interpret the results.
Fluency in written scientific and technical English is necessary, oral English is highly desirable. Well mastered scientific and technical English (C1 or above)
Knowing how to work in a team. To be motivated.
Knowledge of classical and coherent telecommunication techniques
Experience in design and system engineering would be appreciated

Secondary skills appreciated or to be acquired :
General knowledge of time and frequency metrology.
General knowledge of time and frequency transfer techniques.
Calculations and/or simulation with one or more of these languages: C/C++, python, LabView, Matlab
Low-noise telecommunication and fast electronic communication protocols would be a welcome addition.
Second European language (German, Spanish, Italian…) is a plus: A2 or above

General Competencies :
Physics of the engineer (notion of thermic, instrumentation)
Metrology (voltage measurements, delay measurements, noise spectra measurements, signal processing)

Work Context

The SYRTE, with 125 staff, is one of the world's leading laboratories in the field of metrology, primary time-frequency references and interferometry with cold atoms. The laboratory is located at 61 avenue Denfert-Rochereau, on the Observatoire de Paris website (http://syrte.obspm.fr/)).

The spectacular progress of atomic clocks over the last two decades makes the means of satellite comparisons used until now insufficient in terms of resolution and uncertainty. The transport of frequency and time reference signals by optical fibre is by far the most promising. Time and frequency transfer techniques are established at varying degrees of technological maturity. Several techniques exist on national networks or links. The challenge is the construction of the Europe-wide network and its interconnections with national networks and links.
SYRTE (Observatoire de Paris, CNRS, UPMC, LNE) is in charge of the design and system architecture of this network, as part of a European infrastructure development project, which is financing the position for a period of 2 years.

The engineer will be part of the SYRTE optical frequency team. Under the direction of a research engineer, he or she will work in particular with a design or research engineer dedicated to the project. He or she will work in close collaboration with the French and European partners of the project. The main place of work is the SYRTE, at the Paris Observatory. Missions in Europe are to be planned (2-3 trips of 2-3 days per year).
