Missions

In the field of biomaterials, synthetic biodegradable polymers are mainly limited to two categories: polyesters (e.g., polycaprolactone, polylactide, polyglycolide and their copolymers) and polypeptides. However, there are many drawbacks and limitations to the synthesis of well-defined and functionalized polymers (e.g., complex synthesis, low structural and compositional diversity, difficult functionalization, etc.). Allowing the degradation of vinyl polymers appears to be a major challenge. In this spirit, the idea is to copolymerize a traditional vinyl monomer with a cyclic ketene acetal (CKA) comonomer, which is a precursor of biodegradable ester functions, via a radical ring-opening polymerization (rROP) mechanism. In this case, rROP has both the advantages of ring-opening and radical polymerization, and thus allows the radical synthesis of well-defined biodegradable copolymers with ester functions in the polymer backbone.

This project will attempt to diversify the families of degradable vinyl copolymers by copolymerizing various vinyl monomers with CKAs of varying structures, with a view to industrial use
