Job Description

Missions

The postdoctoral researcher will have as main mission to lead the research on the characterization and quantification of the spatio-temporal variability of bedload transport in rivers of the Seine basin, as part of a research project on bedload metrology.

He will be responsible for:
1) Designing and supervising the implementation of experimental devices to measure bedload transport.
2) Coordinating field activities, data processing, analysis, and interpretation.
3) Developing innovative methodologies to improve the understanding of sediment dynamics.
4) Co-supervising the recruited study engineer within the project and collaborating with the laboratory's permanent members.
5) Disseminating results through scientific publications and presentations at conferences and seminars.

Activity

Main Activities
1) Design and supervision of instrumentation:
- Define measurement protocols (PIT-tags, hydrophones, geophones, sediment traps, piezometric probes): full responsibility.
- Supervise site equipment and device maintenance: primary responsibility, with support from the study engineer.
2) Data collection and management:
- Organize and supervise field campaigns: full responsibility.
- Ensure the quality and consistency of collected data: primary responsibility.
3) Scientific analysis and interpretation:
- Develop advanced analysis methods to quantify bedload transport: full responsibility.
- Interpret results and propose explanatory models: primary responsibility.
- Structure and populate an open and spatialized database: shared responsibility with the study engineer.
4) Supervision and collaboration:
- Co-supervise the study engineer in their tasks (instrumentation, collection, data processing): shared responsibility.
- Collaborate with permanent laboratory members and project partners: shared responsibility.
5) Scientific dissemination:
- Write scientific articles and technical reports: primary responsibility.
- Present results at conferences and seminars: primary responsibility.
- Participate in writing project proposals for future funding: shared responsibility.

Secondary Activities
1) Contribute to the training of team members (PhD students, interns).
2) Participate in scientific outreach activities.
3) Conduct a scientific watch on advances in fluvial hydrogeomorphology.

Your Profil

Skills

Technical Skills
1) Expertise in fluvial hydrogeomorphology:
- Mastery of sediment transport processes and fluvial dynamics.
- In-depth knowledge of bedload measurement methods (PIT-tags, hydrophones, geophones, etc.).
2) Modeling and data analysis:
- Proficiency in GIS tools (QGIS, ArcGIS) and hydraulic modeling software (HEC-RAS, TELEMAC, Mike).
- Advanced programming (Python, R, MATLAB) for data processing and analysis.
- Experience in statistical processing of spatial and temporal data.
4) Instrumentation and metrology:
- Knowledge of sensors and measurement instruments (hydrophones, geophones, sediment traps).
- Ability to design experimental protocols.

1) Project management: Planning, coordination, and monitoring of research activities.
2) Scientific writing: Writing articles, reports, and project proposals.

- Laboratory name: Laboratory of Physical Geography (UMR8591).
- Location: 2 rue Henri Dunant, 94320 Thiais.
- Staff: 56.
- Research themes: The research conducted at the Laboratory of Physical Geography is structured around both fundamental and applied research, including the reconstruction of Quaternary paleoenvironments, the historical evolution of hydrological systems, biodiversity analysis, the effects of global climate change on mountain environments, the assessment of natural hazard dynamics, and, for each of these themes, the study of the impact of environmental variability on the affected human populations, involving the implementation of prevention protocols in applied cases.

1) Team: Fluvial and Coastal Hydrosystems.
2) Hierarchical position:
- Attached to the scientific leaders of the project.
- Direct co-supervision of the study engineer and collaboration with permanent members.

Constraints and risks

1) Fieldwork: Frequent travel to sites within the Seine basin (sometimes difficult access).
2) Weather conditions: Exposure to inclement weather (rain, cold, heat) during measurement campaigns.
3) Safety protocols: Mandatory use of personal protective equipment (PPE) (life jackets, helmets, boots).
4) Travel: Occasional missions in Île-de-France and the Paris basin (duration varies according to project needs).
5) Mental workload: Managing tight deadlines for publications and reports (requires anticipation).
