Job Description
Missions
The successful candidate will contribute to Task 1 of Axis 3 – Scenarios, projections and biodiversity conservation – of PC4 of the PEPR DYNABIOD programme (Dynamics of terrestrial biodiversity). This task builds the conceptual and methodological foundation needed to develop scenarios in which socio-economic transformations, conservation and restoration actions, and biodiversity trajectories are considered jointly. This work will form the basis for the subsequent tasks of WP4.3, which focus on modelling and spatialising scenarios, and then on building nature-positive scenarios.
Recent research points to a shared observation: biodiversity scenarios remain fragmented and their design choices are rarely made explicit, while the transition scenarios developed in other communities (climate-energy, food, land use, economics, territorial foresight) give little consideration to biodiversity. Task 1 aims to bring these communities into dialogue in order to identify the conditions for joint scenario design.
The successful candidate will play a central role: drawing on their knowledge of biodiversity models and observational data, they will articulate what accounting for biodiversity requires of scenario architectures (variables, scales, time horizons, feedbacks). They will then confront these requirements with the approaches developed by socio-economic communities, and identify what the latter contribute in return — for instance in terms of systemic coherence, the treatment of uncertainty, or the robustness of trajectories. Hosting the position at CIRED (International Research Centre on Environment and Development) is specifically intended to anchor this work in close contact with these communities.
Activity
The work is based on a comparative analysis of scenario-building approaches and on their discussion with scientific communities and stakeholders. It is organised into three components:
- Analysing existing transition scenarios and pathways, across different scenario communities (biodiversity and conservation, climate-energy, agriculture and food, land use, economics, territorial foresight, etc.). The analysis will focus in particular on the questions the scenarios address, their assumptions, the levers and transformations considered, the scales involved, the quantification and modelling methods, and the way impacts on biodiversity are represented. The aim is to identify approaches and elements that can be transferred to the construction of integrated biodiversity scenarios.
- Confronting and structuring these approaches within an interdisciplinary framework for DYNABIOD. This work will seek to identify complementarities and tensions between the different ways of building transition pathways, and to specify the conditions needed to articulate transformations of production and consumption systems, transition policies and levers, conservation and restoration actions, and biodiversity trajectories. This reflection will be informed in particular by a series of DYNABIOD scientific and science-society events, combining exchanges between scientific communities with engagement with stakeholder needs.
- Translating these results into guidelines for the subsequent developments of PC4, specifying the methodological choices, data and indicator needs, modelling approaches and cross-scale linkages to be explored in the following tasks. The objective will be to formalise a design framework for future DYNABIOD scenarios, while identifying the open questions and the developments required for their implementation.
In addition to this work, the successful candidate will contribute to the organisation, facilitation and scientific dissemination of the DYNABIOD event series on scenarios,
Your Profil
Skills
We are looking for a researcher in ecology/biodiversity with experience of global change, scenarios and/or socio-ecological pathways, who wishes to develop interdisciplinary work with the economic and social sciences. The expected skills include all those required to prepare, set up and carry out interdisciplinary research at the interface between the life sciences and economics.
These include, among others:
- Teamwork;
- Project management;
- Advanced skills in modelling and scenario building;
- Advanced skills in data analysis;
- Advanced proficiency in English (working language)
Your Work Environment
The PEPR Dynabiod programme, funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR) under the France 2030 investment plan, aims to deepen our understanding of the dynamics of terrestrial biodiversity – plants and invertebrates – in order to better protect it. Co-led by the CNRS and the MNHN (French National Museum of Natural History), Dynabiod brings together a multidisciplinary scientific community using innovative approaches (environmental genomics, remote sensing, artificial intelligence, citizen science, etc.) to characterise and understand temporal changes in biodiversity – past (through natural history collections), present (monitoring schemes) and future (scenarios).
