Job Description
Missions
The postdoctoral project focuses on research in mathematical optimization and its applications to machine learning and artificial intelligence, with a particular emphasis on the development and analysis of efficient numerical methods for training large-scale models. The work will focus notably on techniques for accelerating the convergence of optimization algorithms, whether through accelerated gradient methods, stochastic or adaptive approaches, or preconditioning strategies, in order to improve computational performance in very high-dimensional settings. A significant part of the project will concern the theoretical analysis of the convergence properties and algorithmic complexity of these methods, particularly in the non-convex settings encountered in deep learning, with the goal of better understanding the trade-offs between accuracy, execution speed, robustness, and computational cost. These theoretical developments will be complemented by extensive numerical experiments on contemporary artificial intelligence models, including the study of large-scale performance, distributed computing challenges, and constraints related to memory and energy efficiency.
Activity
The postdoctoral researcher will work within a research environment combining applied mathematics, optimization, statistical learning, and scientific computing. They will benefit from considerable scientific autonomy in shaping research directions in line with their own interests and expertise, while actively contributing to defining the project's priorities. The position offers the opportunity to publish in leading journals and conferences, to co-supervise PhD and master's students, and to develop collaborations with other researchers in the lab or at partner institutions. Prior research experience (a PhD) in optimization, applied mathematics, machine learning, or a related field is required, along with strong proficiency in scientific computing tools. This position represents an opportunity to contribute to fundamental advances while developing tools directly relevant to modern applications of artificial intelligence.
