Missions

establish provenance and identify production sequences (*chaînes opératoires*) and craft practices for objects that are often removed from their original context and scattered across museum collections.
Objective 1. Characterize the technical practices developed by goldsmiths to expand their color repertoire—such as the incorporation of enamel, glass microbeads, and gemstones—and explore the links between these materials and the color conventions of Hellenistic jewelry.
Objective 2. Reconstruct production sequences (*chaînes opératoires*) and identify major trade networks for colored materials. Particular attention will be paid to the relationship between goldsmiths and glassmakers—a connection still poorly understood for the Hellenistic period—as well as to tracing the origins of the glass and gemstones.
Objective 3. Examine the semantic and multisensory dimensions of polychromy, approaching it as a cultural language that shapes perception and value. Col-OR will map the color palette used in the analyzed jewelry corpus and assess the interplay between color, style, iconography, and social display. Furthermore, a targeted study of Greek and Latin textual sources will support an analysis of the vocabulary of jewelry and color, as well as the connections between material and perception.

Activity

Typological and technological study using macrophotography and optical microscopy.
Non-destructive and quasi-non-destructive analyses (PIXE–PIGE, LA-ICP-MS) for provenance and characterization studies of glass, enamel, gemstones, and gold, including forms of glass recycling.
Textual and iconographic research on polychromy, linking color choices to style, social display, and ancient color terminology.

L'étude de la polychromie dans la joaillerie hellénistique nécessite en outre une connaissance solide des productions hellénistiques adriatiques afin de mieux re-contextualiser les objets aujourd'hui réunis dans les collections muséales franciliennes.
L'étude comparée nécessite également la maîtrise de deux langues français et italiens (niveau A)
The candidate must possess a strong command of archaeometric research and the study of objects, as well as the ability to read and interpret images and Greek and Latin textual sources. This dual background is essential to Col-OR's aim of approaching polychromy not merely as a technical phenomenon, but also as a cultural and semantic language.
Furthermore, the study of polychromy in Hellenistic jewelry requires a solid understanding of Hellenistic production in the Adriatic region in order to better re-contextualize the objects currently held in museum collections in the Île-de-France region.
Comparative study also requires proficiency in two languages: French and Italian (Level A).

Your Work Environment

The Aoroc laboratory (180 members), located at 45 Rue d'Ulm (Paris 5th arrondissement) within the ENS-PSL premises, conducts research spanning the archaeology, history, and philology of the ancient world.
