Missions

The « Laboratoire Météorologique Dynamique » is looking for a Doctor to study the interactions between climate, energy, buildings and air pollution at regional scale. This research will focus on the estimation of residential emission fluxes and air-quality modeling at a 2050 horizon. The study will focus on different French cities to cover the different climate zones of France (Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Grenoble and Bordeaux). Meteorological conditions will be extracted from EURO-CORDEX climate projections.

Activities

-Literature search to establish a correspondence between buildings' energy demand (installations and fuel) and pollutant emission fluxes (emission factors). Energy demand simulations will be carried out by the CSTB and the COMETH model.
-Estimation of pollutant emission fluxes from the residential sector for the present-time building stock and its 2050 projection (both these representations of the French building stock will be prepared by the CSTB).
-Conduct air-quality simulations with the CHIMERE model (developed in the team) for different meteorological conditions extracted from EURO-CORDEX climate projections.
-Present the obtained results in the form of a scientific paper to submit at an international peer-review journal.

Skills

-Profound knowledge of atmospheric chemistry and physics
-Experience in air-quality modeling
-Notions of atmospheric pollutant emission modeling
-Programming (shell, fortran, python or other equivalent language)
- Experience in writing scientific documents in English

Work Context

This research is part of the BATENQUE project (December 2020-December 2023) funded by the PRIMEQUAL program and the 2019 Call “QUALITÉ DE L'AIR, CHANGEMENT CLIMATIQUE, ÉNERGIE”. Researchers from three labs of the IPSL (LMD, LATMOS and LISA) and the CSTB (Centre Scientifique et Technique des Bâtiments) are involved in the project and will participate in the follow up of this research. The BATENQUE project sets up a multi-disciplinary modeling chain that includes regional scale meteorological modeling, energy demand simulations and air-quality modeling (outdoors an indoors) and exposure. The work proposed here will focus on the estimation of residential emissions and outdoor air-quality modeling.
