Job Description
Missions
The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for characterizing carbonaceous species relevant from an interstellar perspective (ANR INTERSTELLAR project) produced by two types of original reactors (low-pressure premixed or diffusion flames). The analyses will be performed using laser-assisted mass spectrometry and vibrational spectroscopy. Advanced statistical analyses will be applied to link the information on the composition of the species, obtained by mass spectrometry, with their optical properties.
Activity
- Analyze species sampled in flames using laser-assisted mass spectrometry and optical spectroscopy;
- Deduce the optimal operating parameters of the reactor to form species relevant from an interstellar perspective;
- Write analysis reports, process and interpret data;
- Promote the work in scientific publications.

Your Work Environment
Host laboratory: UMR8523 PhLAM (CNRS - University of Lille): Physics of Lasers, Atoms, and Molecules - Cité Scientifique Campus, Villeneuve d'Ascq
Host team: ANATRAC (Trace Analysis) - 5 permanent staff (2 professors, 3 associate professors), 1 CPJ, 3 doctoral students, 2 postdoctoral researchers
Current activities in the host team: physicochemical analyses using mass spectrometry and optical spectroscopy (secondary organic aerosols, combustion, microplastics, photodegradation, meteorites, microfossils)
The ANATRAC research group has acquired extensive expertise in characterizing the physicochemical properties of carbonaceous surfaces, ice, aerosols, and meteorites by developing a cutting-edge high-resolution (HR)-L2MS technique and comprehensive data analysis protocols over the past 20 years.
The proposed position is part of the ANR INTERSTELLAR project. The consortium brings together unique expertise in combustion and laboratory astrophysics to exploit original flames, efficiently produce large molecular systems in the gas phase from the soot nucleation zone, and study their photophysics under conditions simulating those of the interstellar medium. Structural characterization, electronic absorption, electronic fluorescence, and recurrent fluorescence are studied through in situ, online, and ex situ experiments, supplemented by in-depth theoretical modeling. The project should advance the identification of carriers of unexplained interstellar spectral signatures.
