Job Description
Missions
The engineer will develop and carry out experiments using innovative mass spectrometry instruments (including laser-assisted techniques) at both high and low resolution, while ensuring the operation and further development of a fleet of seven mass spectrometers.
Activity
Assess scientific needs, propose appropriate measurement techniques/methods, analyze metrological constraints, and design or improve measurement systems. Examples include:
*Installing new instruments and optimizing existing mass spectrometers;
*Optimizing laser optical paths for chemical imaging;
*Implementing atmospheric-pressure interfaces;
*Integrating new laser sources.
Lead measurement activities, interpret results, and ensure their validation. Examples include:
*Performing sample analysis using mass spectrometry: sample inventory, optimization of acquisition parameters, calibration, data processing, validation, and interpretation;
*Maintaining an instrument logbook documenting operating procedures and methodologies;
*Writing experimental and analytical reports.
*Develop and maintain a technology watch to ensure the long-term performance of the instrument fleet under their responsibility. Examples include:
*Conducting research to improve the performance or use of existing equipment in line with technological advances in the field;
*Adapting techniques to address specific scientific challenges;
*Managing preventive and corrective maintenance operations;
*Managing supplier relationships;
*Defining functional specifications and drafting technical requirements.
Disseminate and promote research outputs: writing scientific articles, filing patents, participating in conferences, and engaging in science outreach.
Train and inform users on the principles and implementation of experimental systems, ensure operational safety, and provide expert guidance in the field.

Your Work Environment
The UMR 8523 PhLAM laboratory (Physics of Lasers, Atoms, and Molecules, CNRS – University of Lille) comprises approximately 180 members and conducts research on light–matter interactions, organized into five major research areas: Photonics, Quantum Systems, Dynamics of Complex Systems, Molecular Physics at Interfaces, and Theoretical Molecular Physicochemistry.
Within the molecular physics activities, the ANATRAC research group (Trace Analysis, 12 members) has gained international recognition in two-step laser mass spectrometry (L2MS) and its applications in environmental science, Earth and planetary sciences, and biology/medicine. The international visibility of these activities has enabled the group to secure funding from multiple projects (European, national, and regional), with current involvement in four ANR projects, two CPER programs, one CDP initiative, and the PEPR “Origins” program (targeted project µL2-HRMS).
As part of the CPER and PEPR projects, the installation of two new instruments (Orbitrap and timsTOF) has recently been completed. These acquisitions further expand an already extensive instrumentation platform.
The research engineer will contribute to the development of technical and methodological solutions enabling cutting-edge, high-impact research. They will bring and/or develop new expertise in areas such as ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometry, atmospheric-pressure laser desorption/ablation, chemometrics, multi-technique co-localization, and in situ spectral and chemical imaging.
The position is based at the Cité Scientifique campus in Villeneuve d'Ascq and operates under the functional supervision of the head of the ANATRAC research group.
This position is located within a sector subject to the French national framework for the Protection of Scientific and Technical Potential (PPST). In accordance with applicable regulations, appointment to this role requires authorization from the relevant authority of the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research (MESR).
