Job Description
Missions
The successful candidate will investigate the ultrafast magnetic dynamics of rare-earth orthoferrite and hexaferrite thin films developed within MoxSpin, a collaborative project of the French PEPR SPIN programme. These insulating oxides exhibit magnetic resonances in the sub-THz/THz range and are promising platforms for active manipulation of terahertz waves and spin-based THz generation.
The research combines two complementary directions: (i) identifying magnon and electromagnon modes excited by THz radiation and determining how their response can be controlled by magnetic field, temperature, polarization or a spin-reorientation transition; and (ii) investigating photocurrents and spin currents generated by femtosecond laser excitation and their conversion into THz emission in magnetic-oxide/heavy-metal heterostructures.
Activity
• Perform polarization-resolved THz time-domain spectroscopy on orthoferrite and hexaferrite films as a function of temperature, magnetic field and crystal orientation.
• Identify far-infrared-active magnetic modes and determine their resonance frequencies, linewidths, selection rules and damping mechanisms.
• Investigate how spin-reorientation transitions modify THz transmission, absorption, birefringence and gyrotropy, and explore their optical control using optical-pump/THz-probe experiments.
• Carry out femtosecond-pump THz-emission measurements on bare oxide films and on heterostructures incorporating heavy metals such as Pt or Ta.
• Study the influence of pump photon energy, fluence, polarization and helicity in order to distinguish transient photocurrents, magnon contributions, ultrafast spin-Seebeck transport and inverse-spin-Hall spin-to-charge conversion.
• Develop acquisition and analysis scripts, compare the measurements with electromagnetic and spin-dynamics models, and contribute to publications, conferences and consortium meetings.
Your Profil
Skills
PhD in experimental physics, photonics, ultrafast optics, magnetism, spintronics or a related field. Hands-on experience in at least one of the following areas is expected: THz time-domain spectroscopy, THz-emission spectroscopy, femtosecond pump-probe measurements, time-resolved magneto-optics or ultrafast magnetization dynamics. The candidate should be able to align and automate a complex experimental setup and should have good scientific-programming skills in Python, MATLAB or an equivalent environment. Knowledge of antiferromagnetism, magnons, magnetic resonance or spin caloritronics would be an advantage. Very good scientific English is required; French is not mandatory.
Your Work Environment
The position is based in the THz Photonics group at IEMN (UMR 8520), on the Cité Scientifique campus in Villeneuve-d'Ascq, under the scientific supervision of Mathias Vanwolleghem. The researcher will have access to IEMN's THz time-domain and THz-emission spectroscopy facilities and will work closely with MoxSpin partners specialising in thin-film growth, structural and magnetic characterization and ultrafast magneto-optics. Short research visits to partner laboratories and travel to scientific conferences are expected.
Constraints and risks
The work is mainly experimental and involves class-4 femtosecond lasers, THz sources and detectors, cryostats and magnetic fields. The required safety training and authorizations will be provided when the candidate joins the laboratory.
