Job Description

Missions

Our aim is to define and design next-generation neuromorphic implants with learning capabilities for healthcare applications, utilizing ultra-low power technology for embedded devices. This topic is a major area of research activity of the IEMN laboratory. It is supported by research contracts.

As part of this project, the work will focus on the future development of a completely new generation of embedded neural implants intended for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, facing numerous challenges for which there are currently no solutions. These in vivo embedded neuroprostheses will feature biomimetic adaptability based on neuromorphic devices using CMOS technology.

Activity

As part of this project, the work will focus on the future development of a completely new generation of embedded neural implants intended for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, facing numerous challenges for which there are currently no solutions. These in vivo embedded neuroprostheses will feature biomimetic adaptability based on neuromorphic devices using CMOS technology.

The objectives are:
• To conduct an exhaustive literature review to consolidate the existing state of the art within the
research team in the field of neuroprostheses
• To study and define 'signature' electrical signals associated with neurodegenerative diseases, particularly in the context of hallucinations
• To identify suitable signal processing techniques and adapt them to operate within a low
power consumption framework, in collaboration with the integrated circuit design team (CMOS
technology)
• Draw up a set of specifications for the overall system in collaboration with research teams working in the field of healthcare and responsible for signal acquisition
• Propose a neuromorphic integrated circuit architecture for implementing a closed-loop system, using components from a toolbox containing CMOS-based neuromorphic building blocks that have already been validated at the IEMN
• Interact with design engineers to facilitate the implementation of the selected architecture
• Participate in the experimental characterization of the CMOS circuits following their fabrication
• Carry out a reverse-engineering project with the interdisciplinary research team

Your Profil

Skills

In this context, we are searching for a highly motivated, interested young scientist who is able to work both as part of a team and independently, with a solid background in microelectronics (advanced circuit modelling / integrated systems using LT-SPICE or Cadence, neuromorphic circuits, spiking neurons) and who wishes to develop skills in a highly interdisciplinary field within a dynamic team.
The ability to adapt and a keen interest in developing new concepts for healthcare applications – particularly in the field of electrical stimulation for conditions related to neurodegenerative diseases – are highly desirable.
Training may be offered and undertaken according to needs and available skills.

Your Work Environment

The IEMN brings together, within a single organisation, the bulk of regional research in a broad scientific field ranging from the physics of materials and nanostructures to telecommunications systems and acoustic and microwave instrumentation. Particular emphasis is placed on micro- and nanotechnologies (nanostructures and nanoelectronics, microelectronics, microwaves and microsystems).

The candidate will be based at the IEMN, which is one of the laboratories in the Renatech network. He or she will have full access to the various technical resources required to carry out the project.
