Missions

The recruited engineer will join the Terahertz (THz) Photonics Group of the Institute of Electronics of Microelectronics and Nanotechnology in Villeneuve d'Ascq (IEMN). Its mission will be to design the optomechanics, to realize and to test a molecular laser in the terahertz frequency domain (1 THz = 1012 Hz) also called far-infrared.

Activities

The recruited engineer will work in the context of the MOTEL project (Molecular TErahertz Laser) which consists in the realization of an innovative and efficient THz laser. The goal is to demonstrate a molecular THz laser optically pumped by a quantum cascade laser (QCL). This laser will be tunable by steps on a large bandwidth (0.5 to 2.5 THz) and will work at room temperature. It will be composed of two parts: a specific QCL developed at IES Montpellier and a THz laser cavity developed at IEMN Villeneuve d'Ascq. Among the applications identified are THz spectroscopy (gas, non-contact semiconductor doping measurement), imaging (non-destructive testing), metrology or radio-astronomy.
The THz laser cavity containing the molecules will be designed at the IEMN by the engineer guided by his supervisor. This design will build on prototypes previously designed in the research group. It will include different aspects to be reconciled: optical (medium-infrared and THz), mechanics (displacement of mirrors), vacuum and gas technique. The manufacture of the various sub-assemblies will then be subcontracted to the competent companies. Some sub-assemblies will then be assembled and tested. Finally the complete laser will be assembled and tested. Its performances (power, spectrum) will be measured.

Skills

The candidate must have an engineering degree in one or more of the following specialties: optics, optomechanics, optoelectronics, electronics. Knowledge of optical and mechanical design software will be appreciated. The candidate may or may not already have experience in these fields as well as in the field of research.

Work Context

The candidate will join the THz Photonics group of IEMN which specializes in THz and medium-IR components and devices. The group has expertise in simulation, characterization and technological manufacturing of devices. Several projects have already focused on the realization of THz molecular lasers. The candidate will work within the framework of the CNRS MOTEL pre-maturation project within the IEMN and in collaboration with IES Montpellier.
