Job Description
Missions
The postdoctoral researcher will join the BACCOPA project, contributing to Work Package 3, which is dedicated to the analysis and scientific interpretation of satellite observations of the variability and properties of aerosols and clouds in the equatorial Central African region. The main objective is to study the interactions between biomass fire aerosols and convective systems at a regional scale using a set of original and complementary satellite remote-sensing datasets. WP3 will combine state-of-the-art satellite observations to determine the variability in aerosol concentrations and properties (size, absorption) as well as the characteristics of convective systems (effective cloud radius, liquid/ice water content, cloud cover, cloud top height) present in equatorial Africa. The aim of this approach is to gain a better understanding of how different cloud properties evolve in response to aerosol loads and properties across broader spatial and temporal scales. This WP3 will also be important for evaluating and providing robust observational constraints for the simulations carried out as part of WP4 (high-resolution modelling) of BACCOPA
Activity
• Analysis and interpretation of satellite aerosol and cloud observations in the study area, including regional validation of the aerosol satellite products used
• Development of a regional-scale statistical approach to study aerosol–cloud interactions and gain a better understanding of the dominant processes, thereby enabling an assessment of their overall impact on convection development
Your Profil
Skills
The candidate must hold a PhD in atmospheric sciences, ideally with research experience in aerosols or clouds, including their remote sensing via satellite.
The following skills will be an advantage:
- Expertise in the analysis and interpretation of satellite data, preferably relating to aerosols and/or clouds (3MI, MSG/MTG, EarthCare, etc.)
- Proficiency in scientific data processing and programming tools (Python, Matlab, etc.) and associated statistical methods
- Oral and written communication skills in French and English
- Independence, motivation, drive and the ability to work as part of a team
Your Work Environment
The postdoctoral position forms part of the ANR BACCOPA project, led by the CNRM (CNRS/Météo France Toulouse) in partnership with the LOA, the LISA, the LATMOS and SAFIRE. The LOA is the lead organisation for WP3 of the project, which is dedicated to satellite observations of fire aerosols and convective clouds in the Equatorial Central Africa region, centred on Congo-Brazzaville. The postdoctoral position will be based at the LOA's premises in Lille, within the Aerosol-Radiation Interactions team, and will contribute to the cross-cutting research area of Aerosol-Cloud Interactions. The laboratory is recognised for its expertise in measuring atmospheric properties, particularly those of aerosols and clouds, using space-based remote sensing. The LOA teams are notably involved in the preparation and operation of the European 3MI*/MetOp-SG (ESA/EUMETSAT) space mission, due to be launched in 2025.
