Job Description
Missions
This postdoctoral research project is funded by the 3MI team of EUMETSAT. The project aims to further develop and experimentally apply the GRASP remote-sensing algorithm for monitoring aerosol properties and composition from sun-photometric observations. The Laboratory of Atmospheric Optics is thus offering a six-month postdoctoral position focused on the processing of sun-photometric measurements using the GRASP algorithm and its various versions. The successful candidate will be expected to analyze the retrieved results and contribute to algorithmic improvements through cross-comparison with analogous retrieval products derived from satellite measurements acquired by the state-of-the-art 3MI space mission
Activity
The work will involve the application, testing, and further development of different modifications to the GRASP retrieval algorithm, as well as the processing of observational data to infer aerosol concentration, type, and composition. The main objective is to assess the consistency between ground-based and satellite retrievals and to identify and understand any differences between these applications.
The project builds upon previously developed versions of the GRASP algorithm; however, further improvements and code modifications are expected as part of the research activities.
The successful candidate will carry out a series of algorithm applications and validation studies, present the results at regular project meetings, and implement further improvements based on the outcomes and recommendations arising from these discussions.
The position involves conducting research in the field of atmospheric aerosol remote sensing, documenting and communicating the results to the scientific community through scientific publications and presentations. Additional responsibilities include documenting software tools, as well as preparing technical and scientific reports.
Your Profil
Skills
The candidate must have background in physics, atmospheric sciences, optics, or related disciplines, as well as strong programming skills.
Skills in big data processing and atmospheric radiative transfer are also required, as well as a good understanding of geophysical and atmospheric processes and the use of remote sensing for monitoring of aerosol transport, aerosol impact on environment and air quality.
The position involves international exchanges and the ability to work in a team.
Your Work Environment
The candidate will be working at the Laboratoire d'Optique Atmosphérique (LOA) in Lille, and be part of the team on “Interactions of Aerosol and Radiation”.
He/she will also present the results to the 3MI team of EUMETSAT and work closely with the GRASP SAS company.
