Job Description
Missions
This postdoctoral position is part of the ANR project entitled “Ecology and diversity of metal HYPERaccumulating Species: integrating studies of gene expression, Plasticity of Accumulation, individual fitness, functional syndromes and Complementary Effects (HYPERSPACE)”. Recruitment is linked to WP3 of this project: “Metal hyperaccumulation and fitness.” The tasks are as follows: participating in the implementation of various experimental devices under controlled conditions, participating in plant trait measurements, analyzing data, and promoting the work through conferences and publications
Activity
The two hyperaccumulator plant models studied are Noccaea caerulescens and Biscutella laevigata, from the Brassicaceae family. Following initial cultivation at different levels of zinc contamination, recombinant inbred lines derived from a cross between a metallicolous accession and a non-metallicolous accession of N. caerulescens will be cultivated at different levels of cadmium contamination. Some of the plants will be analyzed for cadmium concentration in the leaves, and the rest will be used to measure fitness-related traits. Tests will also be conducted on B. laevigata at different levels of thallium contamination. The effect of herbivory pressure on cadmium hyperaccumulation and fitness will be tested. B. laevigata seeds are not yet available and will have to be obtained from various locations in Europe (Italy, Poland).
Your Profil
Skills
The expected skills are: solid experience in evolutionary ecology and functional ecology, experience in measuring plant traits (vegetative, reproductive, functional, and physiological), experience in the ecology and/or physiology of hyperaccumulator plants, if possible experience in plant-herbivore interactions, if possible experience in trace metal analysis, solid skills in statistical analysis of ecological data and in the exploitation of scientific data.
Your Work Environment
The experimental work will mainly be carried out at the University of Lille's Greenhouses, Crops, and Experimental Fields platform. All precautions will be taken to protect the premises and personnel when handling cadmium and thallium. The work of measuring trace metal elements will be carried out in the laboratories of building C8 and in the Chevreul Institute building. Supervision will be provided locally by two researchers (Hélène Frérot and Maxime Pauwels), in close collaboration with the ANR HYPERSPACE consortium.
