Job Description

Missions

A call for applications for a postdoctoral position in the humanities and social sciences has been launched as part of a Franco-German (FRAL) project, funded by the French (ANR) and German (DFG) research agencies. The project, entitled DivSky – “A Divided Sky? Interdependencies and asymmetries along the former Inner-German Border” was launched in October 2024 (https://divsky.hypotheses.org/). It brings together around ten researchers and lecturer-researchers (UMR Printemps, UMR Géographie-cités, the Marc Bloch Center, CENTER B/ODERS I N MOTIONS at Viadrina University, Frankfurt (Oder)). The academic disciplines involved in the project are sociology, geography and social anthropology. It also involves a documentary film team (Atelier Limo).

This project focuses on rural areas located to the east and west of the former inter-German border. It examines the impact of this border, more than 35 years after its abolition, on the practices and lived experiences of local residents. The scientific summary of the research programme can be found on the website: https://anr.fr/fr/projets-finances-et-impact/projets-finances/projet/funded/project/anr-23-fral-0007/?tx_anrprojects_funded%5Bcontroller%5D=Funded&cHash=0cdeb0268c8371e59c9687199d989180

The role of the person recruited for this postdoctoral position will be to contribute to WP4 'Local actors and public life: between shared experiences and social imaginaries', which examines political attitudes and commitments on both sides of the former border, based on independent research conducted in specific empirical settings agreed in consultation with the project team. They will seek to shed light on the specific, locally situated ways in which relationships with politics and public affairs are constructed through the debates and controversies surrounding environmental issues (notably the development of renewable energy and forest management) within the village communities under study. The successful candidate will take charge of WP 4 and contribute to the coordination of fieldwork as well as to the strategy for disseminating the project group's research findings. They will be supported by the entire French and German teams.

The DivSky consortium is seeking to recruit an experienced candidate who is familiar with the German research landscape, fluent in French and German, and open to interdisciplinary teamwork. The contract is currently set for a duration of 12 months.

Activity

The research will have several objectives:
- To identify the environmental controversies that have arisen over recent decades in communities along the former inter-German border. To reconstruct their history and identify the key players.
- To develop a research protocol for selected case studies in consultation with the other project members, and then to conduct the interviews
- To analyse the data collected
- Present the findings at internal team seminars and in the field
- To be involved in organising internal and external project events
- Submit proposals for publications in response to external calls for papers in order to present and discuss the preliminary findings of the research.
- Prepare at least one individual publication on the work carried out within the project and contribute to collective project publications.

Your Profil

Skills

- PhD in the humanities and social sciences, preferably in geography or sociology.
- Proficiency in research methods in the humanities and social sciences, particularly semi-structured interviews
- Knowledge of press databases
- Proficiency in analysing press corpora
- A willingness to work in a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment
- Very good writing skills in French (academic articles, research reports, oral presentations, etc.) and, if possible, in German and English.
- Fluency in spoken French, German and English (for oral presentations of results) and in German (for interviews and internal seminars).
The successful candidate will also be expected to play an active role in developing networks for knowledge exchange with French and German scientific partners (inviting them to team seminars, organising round-table discussions, disseminating research findings)

Your Work Environment

On a day-to-day basis, the place of work is at the UMR Géographie-cités on the Condorcet campus in Aubervilliers. Fieldwork in Germany will be funded by the project. The successful candidate will report to Béatrice von Hirschhausen, CNRS Research Director.
The postdoctoral position forms part of a Franco-German collaborative research project (FRAL ANR/DFG project) involving several research units (UMR Géographie-cités, UMR Printemps, Centre Marc Bloch, CENTRE B/ORDERS IN MOTION). The working language within the project is German. The working language within the host UMR at Géographie-cités is French.
