A two-year postdoctoral position starting in early January 2021 is open in Grégory Boël's research group at the Institute of Physico-Chemical Biology (IBPC), in the "Microbial Genetic Expression" unit.


We have shown that proteins belonging to the ABC-F family are translational factors which modulate the activity of ribosomes (Ousalem et al, 2019; Boël, et al.; Chen, et al.). Some ABC-F proteins are involved in bacterial adaptation to their environment, but other specific ABC-F proteins are involved in antibiotic resistance. Their involvement in antibiotic resistance is mediated by the direct interaction of the ABC-F factor with the ribosome (Crowe-McAuliffe, et al., Murina, et al.). But the mechanism of action is still elusive. We propose to study this question by determining the residues essential for the antibiotic protection function of an ABC-F by mutagenesis and high-throughput screening approach. On the other hand, the project will also aim to study the function of the two ABC-F proteins of the photosynthetic bacterium Synechocystis. The candidate will be in charge of the transcriptomic (RNAseq) and proteomic (Mass spectrometry in tandem) analysis of the deletion mutants of each of the two ABC-F genes and of the complemented strains (the strains are already construct). The development of the ribosome profiling method on mRNAs (ribo-seq) in this organism will follow. Our group has developed an experimental device allowing the simple study of ABC-Fs in vivo and in vitro.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a doctorate in all areas of microbiology (genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics). The ideal candidate should be familiar with protein synthesis, RNA biochemistry and high throughput sequencing approaches.

A good knowledge of cyanobacteria genetics and high throughput mRNA-seq and / or ribo-seq sequencing analysis methods (sample preparation, library construction and analysis of results) is required to apply to this position.

The successful candidate must be a motivated scientist with great potential and good team spirit.

Work Context

Most of the experimental work will be carried out at the IBPC in G. Boël's group. The IBPC is a multidisciplinary institute of the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) located in the center of Paris on the Pierre et Marie campus (Paris 5th). The institute has a proteomics and bioinformatics platform which will be utilized for this project.
