Job Description
Missions
The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to the development of new sensing functionalities based on the ultra-stable laser stations of the REFIMEVE infrastructure.
The research will focus on developing experimental methods to exploit REFIMEVE's photonic and metrological systems for innovative measurement and distributed sensing applications over optical fibers.
The work will involve advanced manipulation of the phase of ultra-stable lasers, the development and implementation of advanced modulation and demodulation techniques, and the development of signal-processing methods adapted to new sensing applications.
The postdoctoral researcher will work within a multidisciplinary team combining photonics, instrumentation, electronics, FPGA technologies and signal processing. The position will involve strong interactions with national, European and industrial partners and will contribute to the scientific valorization and dissemination of the results. The postdoctoral researcher will also have the opportunity to propose and supervise internships and to contribute to the supervision of PhD students and early-career researchers.
Activity
Develop new sensing functionalities based on the ultra-stable laser stations of REFIMEVE.
* Design and perform optical-fiber-based measurement experiments.
* Manipulate the phase of ultra-stable lasers using electro-optic modulators (EOMs), Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZMs) and acousto-optic modulators (AOMs).
* Implement laser frequency and phase control techniques, including frequency and phase locking systems and phase-locked loops.
* Develop advanced coherent modulation and demodulation techniques.
* Implement digital modulation schemes, including BPSK, QPSK and related variants.
* Develop digital signal-processing methods adapted to photonic measurements and sensing applications.
* Design, implement and characterize experimental demonstrators for distributed fiber-optic sensing.
* Work closely with engineers responsible for low-noise electronics, digital signal processing and FPGA development.
* Contribute to the integration of new functionalities into REFIMEVE laser stations and experimental systems.
* Participate in experimental campaigns and measurement campaigns with project partners.
* Process and analyze experimental data and contribute to their scientific interpretation.
* Present results at scientific meetings, conferences and workshops.
* Publish results in peer-reviewed scientific journals and contribute to project reports and technical documentation.
* Propose and supervise internships and contribute to the supervision of PhD students.
* Participate in the activities of the associated European and national research projects.
Your Profil
Skills
PhD in photonics, optics, telecommunications, signal processing or a related scientific or engineering field.
* Strong knowledge of photonics and optical communication systems.
* Experimental experience with lasers, electro-optic or acousto-optic modulators.
* Knowledge of coherent modulation and demodulation techniques.
* Knowledge of digital modulation schemes, in particular BPSK and QPSK.
* Strong skills in signal processing.
* Experience in the experimental characterization of photonic systems.
* Experience with laser frequency and phase locking techniques would be highly desirable.
* Knowledge of electronics, FPGA technologies or digital acquisition systems would be an advantage.
* Ability to independently develop, implement and characterize experimental setups.
* Ability to analyze experimental data and interpret measurement results.
* Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary research environment.
* Ability to interact with academic and industrial partners.
* Excellent written and oral communication skills in English; knowledge of French is an advantage.
Your Work Environment
REFIMEVE is a national research infrastructure dedicated to the dissemination of ultra-stable frequency and time references over telecommunication networks. Its optical-fiber network and laser stations also provide an experimental platform for the development of new scientific applications.
The postdoctoral position focuses in particular on the development of innovative **fiber-optic sensing applications**, exploiting the performance of REFIMEVE's photonic and metrological systems.
The project brings together French and European academic and industrial partners, notably within the framework of the European SENSEI project. The work will involve interactions with partners including INRIM, GFZ, Nokia and Exail.
The postdoctoral researcher will benefit from REFIMEVE's advanced technical environment and will work closely with engineers specializing in instrumentation, electronics, digital signal processing and FPGA technologies. In particular, the researcher will interact with research engineers responsible for the development of low-noise electronics and FPGA-based systems.
The position has a strong experimental component and offers opportunities for technology transfer and collaboration with industrial partners, including extended periods of work with Exail in Bordeaux.
The position is funded by European and national research projects. The contract is initially for 24 months, with possible renewal subject to available project funding.
