Job Description
Missions
The Study Engineer is responsible for the development, integration, operation and evolution of REFIMEVE measurement systems.
The engineer will contribute to the development of the next generation of instruments for the infrastructure, from requirements definition and design through qualification and field deployment. The engineer will participate in the design of instrumentation chains integrating electronics, data acquisition, signal processing, control systems and photonics. This includes the development of systems based on embedded and modular architectures, as well as the integration of photonic and optical components. A key objective is to develop modular, compact, reliable and high-performance systems with low power consumption and full remote-control capabilities.
The engineer will participate in the integration of systems combining instrumentation, data acquisition, control systems, electronics, embedded systems and photonics. The work will involve close interaction with specialists in these different fields within REFIMEVE and its partner laboratories.
The engineer will also contribute to the operation, improvement and maintenance of existing systems, as well as to equipment obsolescence management. The position also involves the scientific operation of instruments, participation in national and international measurement campaigns, and the development of new functionalities for REFIMEVE equipment.
Activity
Design, develop and integrate measurement systems for REFIMEVE applications.
Develop modular, compact, robust and low-power instruments.
Design and integrate electronic and data-acquisition systems adapted to the constraints of field-deployed instruments.
Participate in the integration of FPGA-based systems, embedded systems and control systems.
Integrate optical and photonic components and systems into complex instrumentation architectures.
Participate in the design of racks and integrated instrumentation systems, taking into account constraints related to size, thermal dissipation, power consumption and maintenance.
Develop remote-control and remote-monitoring capabilities for instruments.
Maintain and develop systems for signal generation, transfer and acquisition.
Diagnose malfunctions and perform preventive and corrective maintenance of instruments.
Contribute to equipment obsolescence management and define replacement solutions.
Define and integrate the observables required for system monitoring and supervision.
Perform testing, qualification and validation of new systems.
Prepare, organize and participate in deployment and maintenance operations at partner sites.
Organize selected interventions involving external service providers or industrial partners.
Participate in national, European and international measurement campaigns.
Contribute to the development of new functionalities for advanced time and frequency metrology and distributed fiber-optic sensing applications.
Document the systems developed and ensure their transition to operational use.
Contribute to REFIMEVE scientific and technical publications and communications.

Skills
In-depth knowledge of instrumentation and measurement techniques.
Knowledge of signal generation, acquisition and processing techniques.
Knowledge of electronic systems and instrumentation architectures.
Knowledge of control systems and embedded systems.
Proficiency in programming applied to instrumentation, particularly Python or C/C++.
Knowledge of optics and photonics would be an advantage.
Knowledge of electronics, FPGA technologies, digital signal processing, optics or photonics would be an advantage.
Ability to design and implement a complete instrumentation system.
Ability to integrate different technological components into a coherent and operational measurement system.
Ability to diagnose and solve complex technical problems.
Ability to take into account reliability, power consumption, size and thermal dissipation constraints from the design stage onwards.
Ability to work with advanced scientific equipment and develop experimental solutions.
Ability to organize technical operations and work with suppliers and external service providers.
Rigorous approach to testing, qualification and technical documentation.
Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary scientific team.
Autonomy, initiative and a strong interest in experimental development.
Technical English.
Your Work Environment
REFIMEVE is a national research infrastructure dedicated to the dissemination of frequency and time references over telecommunication networks. Its operation relies on high-performance instrumentation systems deployed across a national network and in partner laboratories.
The infrastructure develops and operates systems based on advanced technologies in the fields of metrology, optics, photonics, electronics and scientific instrumentation.
The position addresses two complementary needs: ensuring the reliability, sustainability and operation of currently deployed systems, while contributing to the development of the next generation of REFIMEVE instruments.
A major objective is to develop integrated instrumentation systems in the form of compact, modular, reliable and high-performance racks or platforms, incorporating modern electronic architectures, photonic components, and control and acquisition systems. These developments must take into account the constraints associated with field deployment, power consumption, thermal dissipation, maintenance and remote operation.
The Research Engineer will work within a multidisciplinary team including engineers specializing in instrumentation, electronics, FPGA technologies and information systems. The position also involves close interaction with researchers, PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and industrial partners.
Previous experience in time and frequency metrology or photonics is not required. The position is particularly suited to an engineer with solid experience in scientific instrumentation, measurement systems or embedded systems, seeking to develop further expertise in a high-level scientific and technological environment.
REFIMEVE is part of a long-term development strategy as a national research infrastructure and has recently joined the ESFRI Roadmap. This development is accompanied by the expansion of the infrastructure's instrumentation, data and service capabilities, together with strengthened national and European collaborations. The instrumentation systems developed as part of the position will therefore contribute to a distributed infrastructure operating at national and European scale.
As a service-oriented research infrastructure, REFIMEVE also provides opportunities for the instrumentation developments carried out within the position to contribute to scientific and technical publications and to national and international collaborations.
The successful candidate will report hierarchically to Mr. Pottie and will join the FOP team within the LTE laboratory at the Observatoire de Paris.
