Missions
Technician post in brown algal functional genomics
Brown algae (Phaeophyceae), or brown seaweeds, are multicellular macroalgae that belong to the larger eukaryotic Stramenopile supergroup. Saccharina latissima is an ecologically important kelp that is also the principal species cultivated by the emerging European seaweed aquaculture industry. Within the Kelprime project the Station Biolgique de Roscoff is working with Bodø University in Norway to understand the influence of epigenetic processes on the growth and resilience of cultivated S. latissima.
The candidate will be part of a team that is working towards developing genome editing approaches for S. latissima based on the CRISPR-Cas system as a research tool to explore gene function in this species.
Activités
The project will involve maintenance and growth of wild type and mutant S. latissima strains, application of various different CRISPR-Cas9 methodologies to generate mutant lines and phenotypic characterisation of mutants.
Compétences
The candidate should have experience with standard molecular biology and cell biology (microscopy) approaches and experience working with CRISPR methodology and/or handling brown algae in culture would be appreciated. We are also looking for candidates with good organisational capacity, scientific rigor and an ability to work autonomously within a team. The candidate should also be able to communicate in orally and written English.
Contexte de travail
The host institute, the Station Biologique de Roscoff (SBR, http://www.sb-roscoff.fr/about-roscoff-marine-station/missions.html), is a centre of marine biology and oceanographic research situated in the town of Roscoff on the north coast of Brittany (France) about 60 km east of Brest. The SBR has about 200 permanent employees. The post is financed by the Norway-France collaborative project "Kelprime" and will involve interactions with the University of Bodø.
