The Climate and Environmental Sciences Laboratory is looking for a candidate to develop and validate the ORCHIDEE continental surface model, a component of the IPSL climate model, in Arctic regions. The work will focus on the modeling of thermo-hydric processes in cold regions, the role of vegetation and snow on water, energy and carbon balances.


- To use the ORCHIDEE model and to apply it on the sites of the measurement networks available in Arctic regions
- Evaluate infiltration processes and heat transfer modeling in the presence of permafrost
- Introduce shrubs as a new PFT
- Modeling interactions with snow cover
- Study the response of ecosystems to climate change and in particular the increase of extreme events
- Participate in intercomparison programs implemented in the H2020 Greenfeedback program


-Programming in FORTRAN and Python
-Good understanding of physical and geophysical issues for the development and analysis of model outputs.

Work Context

The work will be conducted in the context of the European H2020 project Greenfeedback, which will start in September 2022 in collaboration with several Danish and Finnish partners. The objective of the program is to better understand greenhouse gas emissions from continental ecosystems, and their response to extreme events such as fires, floods or droughts.
