Missions

The Gendhi project aims to understand how social relations of domination are articulated in order to account for social inequalities in health from early childhood to adulthood. The research is structured around two complementary questions: (i) How are (un)healthy bodies socially constructed? (ii) Do the use of care and the management by the health system differ according to the social properties of sick people?
The approach is resolutely multidisciplinary, combining sociology, demography, economics and epidemiology, in close collaboration with clinician-researchers.
This project is led by Nathalie Bajos, sociologist-demographer and research director at INSERM, Muriel Darmon, sociologist and research director at CNRS, Pierre-Yves Geoffard, economist and research director at CNRS, and Michelle Kelly-Irving, epidemiologist and research director at INSERM.
The objective of this post-doctorate is to examine the social space of preventive attitudes and practices and their contribution to social inequalities in health, based on the case of colorectal cancer screening. The study of colorectal cancer screening appears interesting insofar as the rate of participation in screening is relatively low, with a slight difference between male and female participation (which also means that women participate much less in this screening than in those concerning breast or uterine cancer), and a variability according to social class which could also be lower than expected. This practice therefore seems to be less influenced than other preventive practices and attitudes by the now well-identified differences in gender and class (prevention being more the preserve of women and those in higher social positions). Colorectal cancer screening can therefore be a valuable observatory of preventive attitudes and practices. The study will pay particular attention to the issues of social inequalities in health and the relationship between class and gender.
The research will be qualitative and focused on the individuals for whom the screening is intended: around thirty interviews will be conducted, as well as a possible documentary analysis of prevention campaigns, websites or other materials.
The research will also need to interact closely with the other qualitative and quantitative research conducted as part of the Gendhi project on colorectal cancer. This sociological research will also need to be able to interact with the other disciplines of the project.
