Missions

Gendhi project aims to understand how social relations of domination interact to explain social inequalities in health, from early childhood to adulthood. The research is structured around two complementary questions: (i) How are (un)healthy bodies socially constructed? (ii) Do sick people's access to care and treatment by the healthcare system differ according to their social characteristics? The approach is resolutely multidisciplinary, combining sociology, demography, economics, and epidemiology, in close collaboration with clinical researchers. This project is led by Nathalie Bajos, sociologist-demographer, director of research at INSERM, Muriel Darmon, sociologist, director of research at CNRS, Pierre-Yves Geoffard, economist, director of research at CNRS, and Michelle Kelly-Irving, epidemiologist, director of research at INSERM. This position is intended for a postdoctoral researcher who will work on the theme of social inequalities in the treatment of stroke sequelae, based on quantitative data from EDP-Santé.
EDP-Santé is a large-scale French initiative that combines data from the Permanent Demographic Sample (EDP) with data on healthcare consumption and hospitalizations from the National Health Data System (SNDS). Numerous epidemiological studies have documented social inequalities in the incidence and severity of strokes and associated mortality. However, disparities in post-stroke care pathways and recovery have been less studied in epidemiology, or only on a regional scale, due in particular to a lack of suitable quantitative data. On the other hand, sociological studies have highlighted the major role of social factors such as gender and class in post-stroke care pathways. The objective of this postdoctoral research will be to investigate, using an intersectional approach, how different social relations of domination (class, gender, ethno-racial origin) contribute to shaping the care pathways of people with stroke sequelae.
The EDP-health data will enable socio-demographic information to be cross-referenced at the individual level with data relating to medical and paramedical care in hospitals and in the community. The successful candidate will be required to develop a statistical analysis plan to address the research questions, with a particular focus on the intersectional dimension of the subject. This research will contribute to the interdisciplinary dialogue within the Gendhi project, particularly with regard to the qualitative research already conducted on this topic.

Skills

Essential criteria :
• PhD in epidemiology, demography, economics, quantitative social sciences, statistics, or equivalent level of experience
• General knowledge of social inequalities in health and/or stroke
• Advanced proficiency in statistical software, R, SAS, and/or Stata
• Knowledge of statistical models
• Proficiency in managing large databases
• Analytical and writing skills
• Rigorous, proactive, and able to work with a multidisciplinary team
Other useful but not essential skills:
• Previous experience with data from the EDP and/or SNDS
• Experience in using statistical analysis methods that incorporate an intersectional approach

Work Context

Recruitment at CESSP is linked to the Gender and Health Inequalities (Gendhi) research project. This project has received funding from the European Research Council, via the “ERC-Synergy-2019” call, for a period of seven years. The successful candidate will work under the scientific supervision of Muriel DARMON (PI of Gendhi, CESSP – CNRS UMR 8209 – EHESS – Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne) and Michelle KELLY-IRVING (PI of Gendhi, Equity – CERPOP – Inserm UMR1295 – Université Toulouse).
