Job Description

Missions

Implants are commonly used in orthopedic and dental surgery. Despite their routine clinical use, surgical failures—which can have dramatic consequences—remain difficult to anticipate. Predicting the outcome of an operation is challenging, as it depends on the surgeon, the properties of the implant, and the patient. Surgical success hinges on the evolution of implant stability, which is determined by changes in the biomechanical properties of the bone-implant interface (BII). It has recently been shown that quantitative ultrasound (QUS) is a promising modality, already validated *in vivo*. However, the technique is not yet fully mature. The primary scientific challenges addressed by the UltraImplant project include:
• Determining the feasibility of precisely measuring the bone-implant interface (BII) using ultrasound. The challenge arises from the dynamic nature of heterogeneous bone tissue—which varies across both space and time—combined with significant attenuation.
• Designing multi-element transducers tailored to the specific configuration, particularly bulk PZT transducers and Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducers (MUTs).
• Integrating various experimental configurations to obtain complementary information about the BII.
• Minimizing the computational time required for simulations.
• Developing an appropriate inversion strategy to create a real-time decision-support system for future clinical applications.

Activity

The candidate will carry out biomechanical and acoustic analyses. Design, modeling, and numerical simulation work will be required to better understand the phenomena involved.
