Job Description

Missions

The candidate (M/F) will investigate heat and moisture transfer in natural porous materials at the macroscopic scale, primarily using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a non-destructive technique that enables the spatial and temporal monitoring of water distribution. Complementing NMR relaxometry measurements conducted at smaller scales, MRI will be used to study how moisture profiles evolve under different thermal conditions and to identify the mechanisms responsible for water redistribution, spatial heterogeneity, and the propagation of transfer fronts.

Activity

In the context of research, the candidate (M/F) will be expected to:

- Prepare bio-based or geo-based samples with different formulations and water contents.
- Develop and implement an MRI-compatible cell to study moisture transfer at a larger scale within the team.
- Conduct NMR/MRI characterisation at different scales and analyse the effects of temperature.
- Perform a combined analysis of experimental, microstructural and numerical results.
- Disseminate the scientific findings through publications and presentations, and contribute to the activities of the ANR project.

Your Profil

Skills

PhD in physics, physical chemistry, materials science, civil engineering or a related field. Experience in MRI/NMR, signal and image processing, transport in porous media, or thermal experimentation would be an advantage. The candidate should be rigorous, self-reliant, interested in experimental work, and able to work effectively as part of a team.

Your Work Environment

Laboratory and host team :
Navier laboratory is a joint research unit of École des Ponts ParisTech (ENPC), Université Gustave Eiffel and the CNRS. It brings together around 170 people working on the mechanics and physics of materials, structures and geomaterials, with applications in civil engineering, geotechnics, the environment and energy.
Within the laboratory, the Rheophysics and Porous Media team studies the physical properties of particulate materials—including granular materials, pastes, suspensions, foams, gels and porous media—by combining experiments, theoretical modelling and numerical simulations. The team favours model materials whose physical parameters can be controlled, enabling quantitative comparisons between experiments, models and simulations. This approach helps to improve understanding of the general properties of these materials and their applications.

Project context :
The ecological transition in the building sector is encouraging the use of bio-based and geo-based materials, whose hygrothermal regulation properties offer significant potential for sustainable construction. However, understanding the interactions between temperature, water content, pore structure and transport mechanisms remains a major scientific challenge. These interactions are particularly complex when materials are exposed to changing environmental conditions that create thermal and moisture gradients, spatial heterogeneities and, under certain conditions, changes in the state of water. Characterising these materials at different scales is essential to understanding and predicting their behaviour under real-world conditions.

Constraints and risks

Experimental work will be carried out near MRI/NMR equipment with permanent magnets, and the associated safety procedures must be followed. Low-temperature experiments will require also a relevant safety procedures.
