Job Description

Missions

CNRS offers a 18-month fixed-term contract researcher position to work on the recently funded project ACCTS (“Assessing cirrus cloud thinning strategies by learning from aerosol-cirrus interactions in natural and perturbed conditions”). This project, led by the University of Lille in close collaboration with Sorbonne University and international partners, addresses the critical challenge of understanding cirrus clouds in climate studies. We are seeking postdoctoral researchers to contribute to our mission of advancing knowledge on how aerosols influence cirrus formation and their evolution, under both natural and highly polluted conditions, and how these processes can be represented in models to theoretically assess the potential of cirrus cloud thinning as a climate intervention strategy.

Activity

The selected candidate will investigate how aerosols influence cirrus clouds from regional to hemispheric scales. The work will involve implementing and testing different ice nucleation schemes in regional atmospheric models WRF-Chem and/or CHIMERE, developing new descriptions of primary ice formation from sources such as aviation, wildfire emissions, and mineral dust. High-resolution simulations of selected case studies will be carried out and evaluated against satellite observations to quantify cirrus responses in terms of microphysics, lifetime, and radiative properties. These developments will then be extended to multi-year regional and hemispheric simulations to assess the broader climatic impacts of aerosol–cirrus interactions and their potential role in cirrus cloud climate intervention strategies.

Your Profil

Skills

• PhD in atmospheric sciences
• Knowledge of cloud or aerosol physics
• Experience in algorithm development and satellite remote sensing
• Good written and spoken English
• Ability to work independently as well as in a team
• Proficiency in programming languages (e.g. Python, R, Fortran)

Your Work Environment

The successful candidate will join the LATMOS institute at Sorbonne Université. They will work in close connection with researchers from University of Lille, the University of Vienna, and the Forschungszentrum Jülich. Regular exchanges and research visits across partner institutes will ensure strong integration of the results into modelling frameworks and comparative analyses within the project
