Within a project directed towards the development of nitrogen chemical looping for ammonia synthesis, the CNRS is opening a position for a young researcher at the University of Lille. The position is opened for a researcher possessing practical experience in the in the fields of materials chemistry and / or chemical engineering and / or heterogeneous catalysis. The project will be conducted at the Catalysis and Solid Chemistry Unit, MATCAT team.


•Development of a chemical looping reactor for ammonia synthesis reaction
•Development of experimental procedure for nitrides preparation and characterisation
•Preparation, characterisation and catalytic activity testing of nitrides in ammonia synthesis by chemical looping
•Writing scientific and technical reports, technical procedures.


- Doctoral degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering (or equivalent)
- Technical know-how in materials chemistry and heterogeneous catalysis
- Good knowledge of French and / or English language, supported by the production of scientific documents in one of these two languages (scientific articles, technical reports).

Work Context

Nitrogen is a key constituent of various products, including fertilizers and many chemical intermediates. Although air, composed of 78% N2, constitutes an accessible and unlimited source of nitrogen, the latter is not very reactive and the production of the majority of nitrogen containing products requires the use of ammonia as a source of reactive nitrogen. The development of the Haber-Bosch process to fix nitrogen into reactive nitrogen (NH3) makes it possible to meet the growing need of humanity for this molecule. However, the process is carried out under conditions of extreme pressure and temperature (T> 450 ° C, P> 150 bar) inducing an excessive consumption of energy: 1-2% of the world production of energy is consumed by this method.
The objective of this study is to develop an alternative process for the synthesis of ammonia under mild conditions and at ambient pressure based on Chemical Looping. This study will investigate the properties of nitrided metals as materials for nitrogen transfer.

Constraints and risks

Due to the specific nature of the position, the recruited scientist must be formed to the specific risks of implementing gas phase catalytic setup. The chemical risks associated with the use of NH3 and H2 are minimized thanks to the presence of specific detectors and the presence of continuous air extraction.
