M/F Research Engineer — general coordination, co-coordination of Work Package 2, and research (forms of violence) — ANR project EVIMOB

Missions

The research engineer will be integrated into the team of the ANR EVIMOB project (CASE/UMR 8170) and will work in close collaboration with it as well as with Burmese partners in Myanmar. He/she will hold a mixed position combining coordination and research, structured around two main components.
Coordination component. He/she will carry out a general project coordination mission, in support of the scientific coordinator and of ANR management (monitoring of the schedule, deliverables, collective outputs and scientific budget), as well as the co-coordination of Work Package 2 – How does mobilisation inform experiences of violence? –, in liaison with the other WP2 co-coordinator. He/she will also take part in the cross-cutting reflections related to WP1 – Repertoires of contention: cross-disciplinary analysis of mobilisation, history, and cycles of collective action – and, more generally, will be associated with the project's reflections and programming.
Research component. He/she will contribute to the project's research through analysis and publication work. The precise research topic, attached to WP2 and articulated with the project's issues (experiences of violence, memory, mobilisation), will be defined jointly with the recruited person according to their profile, with the possibility of carrying out fieldwork (mission funding available).
He/she will take part in the analysis of the project's materials and in the publication of results in the form of scientific articles, as well as in their dissemination at international conferences and on the project's Carnet Hypothèses. Finally, he/she will collaborate in the preparatory activities for the programme's closing events (in particular the final conference in Paris & Yangon): he/she will attend the meetings held for this purpose and will play a key role in organising the various collective outputs that will result from them.

Activity

The position requires a strong aptitude for teamwork and for facilitating an international collective. A command of French and English (read, written, spoken) is essential; knowledge of Burmese is highly desirable.
Coordination activities:
– Joint general coordination of the project in support of the scientific coordinator and of ANR management: monitoring of the schedule, deliverables, scientific budget and collective outputs;
– Co-coordination of Work Package 2: organising meetings, monitoring the WP's work and outputs;
– Organising and facilitating the project's coordination bodies (quarterly cross-WP meeting, monthly ANR coordination hour); defining and circulating the annual calendar;
– Support for organising scientific events (internal workshops, conference panels, closing conference).
Analysis and dissemination activities:
– Co-organising the project's internal workshops;
– Support for monitoring the blueprints (Collaborative Approach; Ethics and Politics of Research);
– Contributing to the project's Carnet Hypothèses website in collaboration with the project's researchers;
– Taking part in the management of the project's data (storage and organisation on dedicated platforms, in compliance with the data management plan);
– Taking part in reflection on the valorisation of the project's materials;
– Writing scientific articles and/or chapters;
– Presenting scientific papers at conferences and congresses;
– Possibility of research fieldwork.

Your Profil

Skills

This position is aimed at a person holding at least a Master's degree (bac+5) in anthropology or political science (or a related discipline: history, area studies, geography). The research engineer must have a very good knowledge of Myanmar.
Confirmed experience in coordinating collaborative and international research projects is essential for this position, which has a strong dimension of facilitation and organisation.
A command of French and English (read, written, spoken) is essential; knowledge of Burmese is highly desirable.
The position requires an aptitude for teamwork: he/she must have experience of collaborative research and of integration into international teams. Autonomy, organisational rigour and the ability to sustain a research collective are expected.

Your Work Environment

The Centre Asie du Sud-Est (CASE) laboratory is a Joint Research Unit (UMR 8170) of the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), located at Campus Condorcet (Aubervilliers).
The recruited person will first need to engage with the members of the ANR EVIMOB project, who have been working together for several years. The position is part of the repositioning — towards editing and coordination — of the co-coordination of Work Package 2. As coordinators, we are committed to facilitating the taking up of duties so that the person becomes operational as quickly as possible; this is also why an excellent command of English is indispensable, with knowledge of Burmese highly desirable.
The EVIMOB project draws on a case study of an understudied Southeast Asian country, Burma/Myanmar, and investigates how memories, experiences and a history of violence can inform and generate new types of contentious action. The coup d'état of 1 February 2021 abruptly put an end to Myanmar's democratic experiment and was followed by a massive rejection of military rule — known as the Spring Revolution — which took many forms: mass protests, barricades, non-violent civil disobedience, alternative political institutions, monk-led movements, ritual actions, online and diasporic activism, and urban and rural guerrilla warfare. The project analyses how the rapid return to autocratic rule reveals a continuum of violence that (re)creates forms of collective action and brings to light multifaceted processes of social and political change. We propose an interdisciplinary approach to mobilisation by analysing continuities and innovations in repertoires, memories and forms of transmission, while questioning how mobilisation can inform the legacies of violence. Our guiding hypothesis is that, in a society where the public mediation of the past is contested, mobilisations reveal alternative ways of mediating shared memories grounded in experiences of violence that serve as a basis for social and political change.
EVIMOB promotes a reflexive approach to research ethics in times of crisis, as well as collaborative methods, and is based on two fundamental research questions, each forming a Work Package (WP): WP1. How do past mobilisations inform contemporary collective action? WP2. How does mobilisation inform experiences of violence?
