Job Description
Missions
The successful postdoctoral researcher will assist the Principal Investigator of the ANR project EE_LaoViet in preparing the Year 3 conference of the research programme.
Activity
• Contribute to synthesizing and formatting the data presented in the brochures that will be distributed during the conference.
• Contribute to the overall Data Management Plan to ensure that information collected during the first round of fieldwork—including statistical data, maps, interviews with local authorities, and the identification of key stakeholders in sectors such as trade, transport, and traditional authorities—can be efficiently managed and used. This work will involve the Didomena platform (EHESS) and HAL.
• Assist with the coordination of the scientific team and the preparation of the project's scientific report.
• Support dissemination activities and publication strategies.
• Develop and maintain networks with French, European, and Southeast Asian research institutions.
Your Profil
Skills
• PhD in the social sciences.
• Knowledge of Laos or Vietnam and of the institutional research environment in one or both countries.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English for dissemination activities such as conferences and academic workshops (English is the working language of the project).
• Proficiency in Lao or Vietnamese is required; knowledge of Chinese would be an asset.
• Ability to work collaboratively within a research team under the supervision of the project coordinator.
• Previous experience in a collaborative research project would be an advantage.
Your Work Environment
The successful candidate will be based at the Centre Asie du Sud-Est (UMR 8170), a joint research unit of the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), and INALCO.
Founded in 2006, the Centre brings together interdisciplinary research on the eleven countries of Southeast Asia (Myanmar, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam), as well as neighbouring regions and territories such as Papua New Guinea, Taiwan, and Southern China. It is located in the EHESS building at the heart of the Campus Condorcet.
The postdoctoral research will be carried out within the framework of the Franco-German ANR-DFG project Encounters and Entanglements: Localizing Global China in Laos and Vietnam (EE_LaoViet).
The project seeks to improve understanding of the mechanisms and tangible social effects of China's expansion into Southeast Asian border countries (Laos and Vietnam) by examining how local communities perceive, resist, negotiate, or appropriate "Global China."
The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with the members of the ANR-DFG project, particularly with the Principal Investigator, Vanina Bouté (EHESS).
The research team consists of six French and German researchers affiliated with the Centre Asie du Sud-Est and the University of Cologne, together with two PhD candidates. The team collaborates closely with university partners and Master's students in Laos and Vietnam.
