Job Description
Missions
The archaeobotanical component, which focuses on plant macroremains (seeds, fruits and wood), aims to reconstruct the natural and cultivated plant environment in order to examine the long-term relationships between plants and human groups, agricultural and dietary practices, traded plants, and strategies for securing wood fuel.
Activity
The recruited individual will participate in various aspects of the mission, including:
-Developing archaeobotanical sampling strategies tailored to the archaeological site and the diverse nature of its archaeological contexts
-Supervising and executing the archaeobotanical protocol (recording sediment samples, extracting macro- or micro-botanical remains, sorting, packaging, and archiving samples)
-Identifying macro- and/or micro-botanical remains
-Digitally processing data
-Interpreting archaeobotanical data
-Writing scientific articles and/or reports
-As part of the al-Bad' project, the researcher will finalize the drafting of chapters on the archaeobotanical assemblage for the monographs on the Nabataean-Roman house (Area 2) and the Bronze Age site (Area 8).
-For the Khaybar project, they will write a synthesis report on the Bronze Age.
Your Profil
Skills
Required skills include scientific expertise:
-PhD in archaeobotany (carpology and/or anthracology)
-Knowledge of past plant and human dynamics in the al-ʿUlā region, as well as historical and socio-economic contexts from the Early Bronze Age to the Islamic period
-Field and laboratory experience (seeds, fruits, wood, and/or phytoliths)
-Ability to analyze and interpret multi-proxy archaeobotanical data
-Strong writing skills in French and English

Your Work Environment
The DADAN project is an archaeological excavation and exploration project focused on the ancient city of Dadan (al-Ula region, northwestern Saudi Arabia), one of the major oasis cities of northwestern Arabia. The site was occupied from the late 3rd millennium BCE (Early Bronze Age) to the 11th century CE (Early Islamic period) (project link).
The successful candidate will be based at CNRS UMR 8167 (Villejuif), but most of their work will take place at the Dadan excavation site, as part of two field missions per year (each lasting approximately 7 weeks).
One month of the mission will be dedicated to the Al-Bad' and Khaybar LDAP projects—two other major oases in northwestern Arabia (Khaybar, Al-Bad').
Constraints and risks
Full-time (100%), with the possibility of extension and remote working.
