Missions
Under the supervision of the DADAN project coordinator, the researcher/area supervisor will conduct excavations, supervise and publish research on the late antique sector of the site, occupied from the 3rd to the 7th century AD (https:/doi.org/10.1111/aae.70009). He or she will also assist the director in the logistical and scientific preparation of excavation campaigns and in the management of data from the excavation.
Activités
Technical and scientific activities:
- Supervise the excavation of the late antique sector of Dadan (sector E), for 12 to 15 weeks of fieldwork per year. To this end, lead a team of two to three technicians, around fifteen workers, and possibly several Saudi students;
- Manage the documentation and archives of the area's excavation;
- Write a detailed annual report on the results of the excavation;
- Contribute to the project's scientific publications (writing or co-writing articles, participating in conferences and seminars);
Training activities:
- Supervise a team of archaeologists and two to three excavation technicians;
- Train Saudi and French students.
Logistics:
- Help prepare field campaigns, in cooperation with the director and project manager (definition of needs, schedule, etc.).
Compétences
- PhD in archaeology or equivalent;
- At least 10 years of experience in archaeology, as a area supervisor;
- Experience in excavation in the Near East, if possible in the Arabian Peninsula;
- Knowledge of historical and archaeological topics relating to the late antique period in the Near East;
- Very good knowledge of computer tools frequently used in archaeology: computer-aided design (Adobe Illustrator), geographic information systems (Qgis or ArcGis), photogrammetry (Agisoft Metashape) and databases (especially Filemaker Pro);
- Good level of English (minimum B2);
- Ability to lead a team in the field and train technicians and/or students in a foreign linguistic and cultural context;
- Ability to synthesize information and good writing skills;
- Driver's license (Class B).
Contexte de travail
The DADAN project is an archaeological excavation and exploration project in the ancient city of Dadan (al-Ula region), one of the main oasis cities in northwestern Arabia, occupied from the end of the third millennium BCE (Early Bronze Age) to the 11th century CE (Early Islamic period) (https://www.orient-mediterranee.com/program/dadan-arabie-saoudite/). The project is led by CNRS UMR 8167 (coordinator: Jérôme Rohmer) and funded by the French Agency for the Development of AlUla. The minimum duration of the project is set at 27 months, from November 2025 to March 2028. The agent will be welcomed into the team "Mondes sémitiques" of UMR 8167, on the CNRS campus in Villejuif.
Contraintes et risques
Full-time 100%, renewable as needed (up to a total of 2 years and 2 months maximum), possibility of remote work.
