The research to be carried out will be part of Philippe Schlenker's ERC Orisem project, "Sources of meaning: Grounding Formal Semantics". Work will be conducted under the joint direction of Philippe Schlenker and Benjamin Spector (member of team 4 of the Orisem project), and will focus on parts 6 and 2 of the project (Cognitive sources of pragmatic meaning, Formal pragmatics of gestures). The work will consist in:
(i) developing new unified models of presuppositions, anti-presuppositions (including cases of "presupposed ignorance"), scalar implicatures (including "blind implicatures"), and recent results on "Logical Integrity";
(ii) taking into account recent gestural data (cosuppositions, co-nominal pointing) in the development of these theories.

The successful applicant will be responsible for conducting original research and publishing articles in collaboration with Philippe Schlenker and Benjamin Spector. Research will be based on two kinds of methodologies:
- construction of formally explicit models using the tools of formal logic;
- detailed analysis of relevant linguistic data, using the method of 'minimal pairs'.
Submission and publication of articles in high-level semantic journals will be a key part of the activities (and will be taken into account in the decision towards a 1-year extension of the position).

The successful applicant will have to actively contribute to the seminars and lab meetings of the LINGUAE team.

The successful applicant must have done world-class research on the following issues:
(i) formal approaches to presuppositions, anti-presuppositions (including cases of "presupposed ignorance"), and implicatures (including cases of "blind implicatures");
(ii) formal approaches to the semantics/pragmatics of gestures.

Work Context

The successful applicant will be a member of the LINGUAE team of Institut Jean-Nicod(UMR 8129), which is part of the ENS Department of Cognitive Studies. S/he will thus benefit from the expertise of the members of the laboratory and of the Department in linguistics, the philosophy of language, and experimental linguistics.e.
