Missions

The researcher will work on the improvement of the accuracy of Cepheids as standard candles, within the ERC Advanced Grant programme "CepBin" (2016-2021, PI: G. Pietrzynski). Our international collaboration recently established the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud to an accuracy of 1% using eclipsing binaries as distance calibrators. Based on this solid reference, we are assembling a high precision calibration of Cepheids and other variable stars as distance indicators.

The researcher will work on the improvement of the determination of the effective temperature of Cepheids from high resolution spectroscopy. The determination of this physical parameter is essential for the improvement of Cepheids as standard candles for the extragalactic distance scale.

Activities

The researcher will analyze archival data sets collected using high resolution spectrographs (UVES, HARPS...) in order to establish a method to estimate the effective temperature of the stars based on spectral line ratios.

Skills

A PhD in Astrophysics is required at the time of the contract signature. The applicant is expected to have excellent written and verbal communication skills. The ideal candidate should be familiar with the analysis of different types of observational data sets, particularly high resolution spectroscopy. Previous experience with variable stars is highly desirable.

Work Context

The researcher will work within the framework of the ERC Advanced Grant "CepBin". He will be based at the Meudon campus of Paris Observatory.
