In this project, we want the robot to be able to express complex facial expressions (mixture of primary expressions and expressive intensities) using visual perception.
A biomimetic approach is used: a robot is used to study the development of the emotional process and an artificial neural networks simulates different structures of the brain and their interactions. The robot's control architecture is an artificial brain that self-organizes for the development of cognitive skills. Consequently, this project has been divided into 2 tasks.
Task 1: In order to get a robot capable of producing any facial expression, rather than a finite set of facial expressions, our solution is to learn facial muscle groups contracting together. Three muscle groups will be exploited: (a) Raising and frowning, (b) opening of the mouth and (c) position of the mouth's corners expressing a smile or pout.
Task 2: To evaluate the neural model, we want to assess the impact of humans on robot learning. The idea is to have several populations (eg typical children, children with ASD and adults) and to evaluate the impact of these different populations on robot learning.

The ETIS laboratory is part of the CYU (Cergy-Pontoise University) which provides all required facilities. The candidate will work in close supervision in a motivated team and highly stimulating scientific environment. Some experiments will be also performed at Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital in Paris (Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Service).
