Job Description

Missions

- Design and synthesis of a new family of hybrid gold–carbon nanostructures, in which carbon nanostructures act as supports for ultrasmall gold nanoparticles. Different synthetic approaches will be explored, including (solvo)thermal, radiolytic and/or sonochemical methods.
- Selective surface functionalization of both components to produce nanostructures bearing independently controlled surface chemistries. Gold nanoparticles will be functionalized to maximize radiation-induced radical production, while the carbon surface will be modified either to prevent the adsorption of a biological ligand corona—which is known to reduce radical enhancement—or to introduce targeting ligands for future in vivo applications.
- Comprehensive characterization of the synthesized nanostructures using complementary analytical techniques, including FTIR, UV–Visible spectroscopy, SFG spectroscopy, DLS, zeta potential measurements and HR-TEM.
- Investigation of the radical reactivity of the nanostructures under gamma irradiation (panoramic ⁶⁰Co source) using fluorescence spectroscopy to quantify radical production.

Activity

The postdoctoral researcher will be a member of the EXPLORE RAINHET project, which brings together researchers from ICP with complementary areas of expertise. Their role will be to advance the project's "Synthesis and Reactivity" research axis.

Your Profil

Skills

Applicants should hold a PhD in Materials Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Nanoscience, or a closely related field, obtained within the last two years. Previous experience in the synthesis or characterization of gold NPs and/or carbon nanostructures will be considered an asset. Candidates are expected to demonstrate strong experimental skills and careful laboratory practice; excellent scientific writing and communication skills in English.

Your Work Environment

The candidate will conduct research jointly within the CPSysBio (Physical Chemistry of Biological Systems) and TEMiC (Electron Transfer in Condensed Matter) research groups at the Institut de Chimie Physique. These two groups possess complementary expertise in nanostructure synthesis and characterization, radical generation under irradiation, and the evaluation of photo- and electrocatalytic properties.

Constraints and risks

The candidate will work with nanoparticles and use a panoramic irradiation source, and will be required to comply with the associated safety regulations.
