Job Description
Missions
The proposed research focuses on the emerging field of coupling quantum materials to light, which opens new avenues for probing and controlling the properties of matter. Recent experimental advances have demonstrated the ability to couple mesoscopic systems—such as quantum dots and Josephson junctions—to microwave cavities, enabling the study of their properties through microwave spectroscopy. Notably, strong coupling with vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field has been experimentally shown to modify phenomena like the quantum Hall effect. On the theoretical front, the interaction between topological matter and cavity photons was also considered. Topological materials are a class of quantum materials that host robust edge that are stable against perturbations. In the weak coupling regime, microwave spectroscopy can be used to probe topological phase transitions, with the cavity acting as a probe. In the strong coupling regime, photons modify the topological phase transition point, leading to new physical behaviours. A proposed research direction involves the theoretical study of interacting electronic models coupled to photons, aiming to both probe and modify electronic properties. Another exciting avenue is the use of cavity coupling to induce effective electron interactions, potentially giving rise to novel and exotic phases of matter.
