Job Description
Missions
The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to the theoretical and numerical investigation of thermal transport properties in two-dimensional (2D) materials, within the framework of an ANR-funded project. They will carry out atomistic simulations (molecular dynamics, first-principles DFT calculations, and solutions of the phonon Boltzmann transport equation) to characterize thermal conductivity and phonon scattering mechanisms in these systems. The position is part of a collaboration with the partners of the ANR consortium and aims to produce high-level scientific results suitable for publication in international journals.
Activity
Setting up and running molecular dynamics simulations (classical and/or ab initio) on 2D materials (graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides, phosphorene, etc.)
Calculating vibrational (phonon) properties using first-principles methods (DFT, DFPT) and developing or applying interatomic potentials
Analyzing thermal transport mechanisms (diffusive and ballistic regimes, finite-size effects, the role of defects and interfaces)
Developing or adapting scientific computing codes and processing simulation data
Comparing numerical results with experimental data obtained by project partners
Writing scientific papers and presenting results at national and international conferences
Participating in ANR consortium meetings and contributing to progress reports
Your Profil
Skills
PhD in condensed matter physics, materials physics, or a related field
Strong background in solid-state physics, particularly Boltzmann Equation and thermal transport
Proficiency in atomistic simulation methods (DFT, phonon calculations) and associated software (VASP, Quantum ESPRESSO, LAMMPS, ShengBTE, Phonopy, or equivalent)
Scientific programming skills (Python, Fortran, or C/C++)
Autonomy, scientific rigor, and strong critical analysis of results
Good scientific English (writing and communication)
Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary, collaborative team
Your Work Environment
The position is based within a condensed matter physics research laboratory, as part of an ANR project dedicated to studying the thermal properties of two-dimensional materials. The postdoctoral researcher will join a team with access to high-performance computing resources (regional or national computing centers) and will work closely with researchers specializing in numerical simulation, as well as, where applicable, experimental teams within the consortium. Occasional travel may be required to attend project meetings or scientific conferences.
Constraints and risks
The position may involve periods of intensive work around publication deadlines or interim reporting to the funder (ANR). The use of intensive computing resources may occasionally require availability outside standard working hours to monitor long-running simulations. Occasional professional travel (consortium meetings, conferences) should be expected. No particular physical safety risks are associated with this position, as the work is primarily numerical and theoretical in nature.
