Job Description
Missions
As part of the CoLiFlow project, funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR), we are offering a postdoctoral research position dedicated to studying the physical mechanisms governing the formation, stability and dynamics of foams in mixtures of organic liquids. Situated at the interface between soft matter physics, interfacial physico-chemistry and fluid mechanics, this project aims to gain a better understanding of how the properties of liquids and flow conditions influence the formation and lifetime of foams. By combining original experiments with theoretical modelling approaches, the candidate will seek to identify the fundamental mechanisms that control the drainage, stability and destabilisation of these complex systems. A key objective will be to develop predictive physical models capable of linking the macroscopic behaviour of foams to the physicochemical properties of the mixtures and to the mechanisms at play at the liquid film scale. This project will offer the candidate the opportunity to conduct fundamental research into as yet unresolved questions in the physics of foams, whilst contributing to the understanding of phenomena of great interest for numerous industrial applications.
Activity
The postdoctoral researcher will design and conduct experimental studies on foam formation, stability and drainage in hydrocarbon mixtures using Bikerman columns and controlled depressurisation experiments. The work will also focus on characterising the dynamics of gas-liquid flows in vertical columns under various operating conditions, with particular emphasis on the influence of hydrocarbon composition, viscosity, gas flow rate and pressure variations. Key activities will include quantitative measurements of foam height, liquid fraction profiles and flow characteristics, as well as the development and validation of theoretical models. The researcher will also contribute to data analysis, the interpretation of experimental results and the dissemination of findings through scientific publications and conference presentations.
Your Profil
Skills
The candidate must hold a PhD in physics, physical chemistry, chemical engineering or a closely related field, and possess a sound knowledge of fluid mechanics, soft matter physics or multiphase flows. Experience in experimental fluid dynamics, particularly in the field of foams, emulsions or gas-liquid flows, would be highly desirable. Skills in experimental design, quantitative data analysis, image processing and numerical modelling (e.g. MATLAB or Python) are desirable. The candidate must demonstrate scientific curiosity, independence, strong analytical skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research environment. Good communication skills and fluency in spoken and written English are required. Fluency in French is also essential for this post.
Your Work Environment
The postdoctoral research will be carried out at PICte, a joint research laboratory established by ESPCI Paris – PSL and TotalEnergies, located at TotalEnergies' research site in Lacq (64170, France). The researcher will work in a stimulating environment combining academic research and industrial expertise, with access to experimental facilities and close collaboration with scientists and engineers from both institutions.
Constraints and risks
Research activities will involve handling oils, chemicals and devices using pressurised gases, as well as the use of experimental equipment operating under controlled pressure and flow conditions. The main health, safety and environmental (HSE) risks relate to exposure to chemicals, the use of pressurised equipment and the handling of flammable substances. Appropriate safety training will be provided where necessary. All experimental activities carried out on site must comply with the HSE rules and safety procedures in force at TotalEnergies' research site in Lacq.
