Missions

Liquid foams are used in many applications, such as separation technologies, waste water treatment, surface decontamination and the production of lightweight solid materials. They thus play a major role for the ecological and energetic transition.
Recent studies have shown that introducing adhesion between the bubbles of a foam can give rise to new macroscopic properties. The aim of the postdoc project is to explore experimentally the new field of research of adhesive liquid foams on two length scales: At the scale of the thin soap films separating bubbles, the objective is to identify the molecular organization giving rise to the adhesion between the film interfaces. At the bubble scale and at the macroscopic level, the consequences of this adhesion for the mechanical foam properties will be explored, as well as self-assembly steered by adhesion. This gives rise to new structures which may have metamaterial properties, and that we aim to solidify.

Activités

- Design and develop an experimental setup probing the flow of adhesive 2D foams. The aim is to measure and to model their rheological properties.
- Develop and optimize an experimental setup for studying the molecular structure of soap films using x-rays, at a synchrotron. Participate in the measurement campaigns at the synchrotron. Analyze and model the results.
- Perform physicochemical measurements of the solutions and the soap films required by these experiments.

Compétences

The candidate must have obtained a PhD in Physics or Physical Chemistry, related to soft condensed matter. Marked interest and competency in experimental work are required. The candidate must also have competencies in one or several of the following fields: Basic concepts of soft matter and interfaces, rheology of complex fluids, x-ray scattering in soft matter.

Contexte de travail

The work will be performed in the framework of the ANR project MOUSTICK. Its partners are researchers at the Institut des Nanosciences de Paris and at the Laboratoire Navier. They are experts of international renown in the fields of liquid foam structures and properties, and of the molecular structure of fluid interfaces.
