Missions
This research project is funded by Plastic Omnium – Intelligent Exterior Systems concerns “smart materials”.
The objective is to make smart thermoformed polymer parts of relatively complex shapes thanks to the multi-element matrix analysis of the propagation of guided elastic waves on surfaces of various curvatures. Two functions are targeted:
1) detection/localization of surface contaminants,
2) touch sensing to make the thermoformed polymer parts interactive.
Activities
To meet these objectives, several approaches have already been identified: analysis of ZGV (Zero Group Velocity) modes, tomography and guided wave phased array imaging. These classic approaches will be compared to more innovative treatments based on artificial intelligence. These methods will be evaluated numerically and experimentally according to the different types of contaminants.
Finally, tests will be carried out on bodywork parts on the Plastic Omnium site.
Skills
The candidate, holder of a PhD, will have in-depth knowledge of guided elastic waves, signal processing and ultrasonic imaging methods. He will be at ease in programming and autonomous in experimental setups. He will have to use elastic wave simulation software. His spirit of initiative will energize his research and his openness will allow him to call on all the skills available within the Langevin Institute and the industrial Plastic Omnium.
