Job Description

Missions

Magnetic materials are at the heart of several technologies that are essential for carbon-free energy and information technology, but their production and processing are energy-intensive, polluting, and pose challenges in terms of sovereignty. In this context, high-performance diagnostic tools for these materials are needed to better characterize them during their formulation and processing, as well as throughout their entire life cycle. In the microwave range (1–50 GHz), magnetic materials exhibit dynamics that can be described in terms of waves called spin waves or “magnons.” These waves can provide very precise information about the magnetic properties of the materials through which they propagate (exchange stiffness, magnetic asymmetries, magnetic textures), The candidate (M/F) will be responsible for exploring the feasibility of a new method for characterizing magnetic materials using a magnonic spectroscopy approach. These developments will draw in particular on a new method for detecting spin waves developed in the laboratory [Science Advances 11, eadx4126 (2025)].

Activity

Your Profil

Skills

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in physics or engineering and demonstrate a strong interest in applied research. This position requires solid experience in nanofabrication, micromagnetic simulation, and/or microwave measurements. Additional qualifications, such as training and supervising master's students, as well as proficiency in data processing tools, will be appreciated.

Your Work Environment

The IPCMS (Strasbourg Institute of Materials Physics and Chemistry) is an interdisciplinary physics and chemistry laboratory with a total staff of 230 people. The successful candidate will join the nanomagnonics team led by Matthieu Bailleul. The project will be funded by the SPHYMAG pre-maturation program of CNRS Innovation. It will involve several researchers from the IPCMS team (M. Bailleul, D. Stoeffler, Y. Henry, P. Noël), , as well as the Stnano nanofabrication facility and a collaboration with the spintronics team at CEA Saclay / SPEC (A. Solignac, G. DeLoubens, H. Merbouche). Located on the Cronenbourg campus, the IPCMS is easily accessible by public transportation and bicycle, just 20 minutes from Strasbourg's historic city center. The CNRS may cover up to 75% of the cost of public transportation passes, and on-site dining is available with meal subsidies from the CNRS.
