Job Description
Missions
The position focuses on the emerging field of topotactic reduction of nickelate thin films, a novel research direction in condensed matter physics. It will be fully funded within the framework of the ANR TAME project.
The project concerns the study of rare-earth nickelates in the infinite-layer phase, either partially or fully reduced. Partial reduction of these materials could lead to the emergence of new electronic and structural properties, which will be explored in the context of neuromorphic applications.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
• Fabricating heterostructures by pulsed laser deposition (PLD);
• Implementing partial and total reduction processes of the films, with or without capping layers;
• Performing structural and electronic characterization using X-ray diffraction and synchrotron-based experiments, in order to identify the possible presence of organized interstitial oxygens;
• Working in close collaboration with the project's theoreticians to interpret the experimental results within the framework of recent theories related to charge ordering.
Activity
• Design and implementation of experiments on thin-film growth and topotactic reduction;
• Active participation in synchrotron measurement campaigns in France and abroad;
• Analysis and interpretation of data in connection with theoretical models;
• Writing of reports, scientific publications, and presentations at international conferences;
• Contribution to the scientific and technical dissemination of the ANR TAME project;
• Occasional supervision of Master's students or interns.
Your Profil
Skills
• PhD in condensed matter physics, materials science, or a related field;
• Strong knowledge of thin-film growth techniques (PLD, MBE, or similar methods);
• Experience in structural characterization (X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, synchrotron spectroscopy, etc.);
• Interest in the study of correlated electronic phenomena and functional materials (oxides, nickelates, cuprates, etc.);
• Ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment, in close collaboration with theorists and other experimentalists;
Your Work Environment
The position will be based primarily at the Institut de Physique et Chimie des Matériaux de Strasbourg (IPCMS–UMR7504), within the “Oxides in Thin Films” team of the Department of Inorganic Materials Chemistry, under the supervision of Daniele Preziosi.
The IPCMS is a joint research unit of the CNRS (INP, INC) and the University of Strasbourg, comprising five departments dedicated to research in condensed matter physics and chemistry. Its multidisciplinary character is reflected in activities covering spin electronics, magnetism, ultrafast optics, electron microscopy and local probes, biomaterials, as well as the synthesis and characterization of functional materials (organic, inorganic, or hybrid).
The Institute hosts a large range of state-of-the-art instruments for materials fabrication and characterization at multiple scales. Today, IPCMS employs around 240 staff members, including approximately 80 researchers and faculty members and 60 engineers, technicians, and administrative personnel.
Please note that this position falls within a sector subject to protection of scientific and technical potential.
